Last weekend’s box office stats confirm that one of the best critically received Australian films in years, Samson & Delilah, has also generated one of the strongest box office openings, at least proportionately. S & D snuck into the top ten at number nine with $199,163, which might seem paltry compared to the top performer (Star Trek, with $4.6 million) but impressive considering the film opened on just 12 screens. It chalked up a huge screen average of $17,170, the highest per screen average for any Australian film released nationally since Lantana in 2001. Not bad news for director Warwick Thornton to receive just before jetting off to Cannes.

Great news. This will do great on dvd too I feel, especially with some publicity if it does well at Cannes.
