Computer geeks ahoy! That’s not exactly geek vernacular but what the hey. Here is a slice of news that’ll be Bigger Than Jesus for a select but (very) sizeable audience of computer gameophiles: Spiderman, Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell director Sam Raimi has signed on to direct a big screen live-action adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s phenomenally successful life-consuming RPG World of Warcraft (WoW for short). I say life-consuming because I have firsthand experience: two of my previous housemates have whittled away a horrifying amount of hours playing this godforsaken game which, by all accounts, and certainly by the evidence at hand, is incredibly addictive. The game first appeared in 1994 and now has a ballpark number of 12 million monthly subscribers, plus massive brand recognition, meaning the movie’s popularity will be a shoo-in. Not much else is known at this stage other than Raimi’s involvement and the involvement of The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven. Raimi is expected to begin work on WoW after he completes Spider-Man 4.
