After pulverising the film industry with Titanic in 1997 mega-minded director James Cameron retreated to the cavernous lairs of computer labs and editing suites to develop the technology powering Avatar, his highly anticipated blockbuster-to-be which is expected to become this festive season’s box office behemoth. Twentieth Century Fox marketing teams around the world collaborated in August for ‘International Avatar Day’ during which 16 minutes of 3D sneak peek footage were presented to presumably salivating audiences (read a good account of a screening at Melbourne’s IMAX cinemas here).
In addition to taking a squiz at the trailer (watch it below) eager beavers can shuffle over to IGN.com to watch a two and a half minute clip from the film entitled ‘Thanatar Chase’ during which a futuristic dinosaur looking creature chases our blue-faced hero through a lush rainforest setting. The special effects and cinematography look stunning; having spent so many years fiddling in the dark – ok, that sounds kinda wrong – we would expect nothing less from Cameron. His going for broke directorial style promises at least one thing: spectacle. And lots of it.
The storyline concerns a “band of humans (who) are pitted in a battle against a distant planet’s indigenous population.” Aussie Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully, a paraplegic war veteran who fights using an Avatar, which are living alien bodies controlled mentally by humans.
Avatar will arrive in Australia December 17.
