Who will play Rupert Murdoch in a NotW movie? Some surprising news…
In the wake of the News of the World phone hacking scandal, one question that has recently bounced around the Crikey office is: who will play Rupert Murdoch in the (presumably inevitable) movie adaptation?
Coincidentally, responses have included three Chrstophers.
| Christopher Plummer:

Christopher Lee:

And Christopher Lloyd:

Other nominated actors include Geoffrey Rush and, at a push, Ian McKellen.
But a strange slice of news from the casting couch has reverberated across the net this week, confirming an ‘actor’ very much out of left field is set to fill the role. Please allow me to introduce him: he’s a man of wealth and taste.
Mick Jagger is reportedly signing on to the role of a “global media mogul with dubious morality.” Yes, the Mick Jagger, the bedraggled 68-year-old Rolling Stone rocker with a face studded by air pockets, skin as rough as sun-burnt sand paper and at least four decades of drug abuse on his vomit-stained CV.
He’s not playing Murdoch per se, at least not by name, but news outlets have leaped onto the story and the similarities between his character and ol’ Rupert will reportedly be unmistakable. Prompted by an original idea from Jagger, Oscar nominated screenwriter John Olson (A History of Violence) has been commissioned to pen the screenplay.
As a reader below pointed out, Jagger has form playing Australian villains, having donned Ned Kelly’s iconic DYI armour in director Tony Richardson’s 1970 Australian film.
