Well Luke, interesting review. I have erred about both of these movies – I’m not a great fan of Luhrmann’s style and my first take on “Spring Breakers” was perplexed at best. I saw Margaret and David review this and they were typically polarised by it, David being the most enthusiastic and alluding to some of the points you make yourself. You have given me a reason to see both and attempt to make the connection…

With regret, agree with Jason, ‘Pines’ is not as good.

Another key difference is that Gosling + Mendes together is just not that interesting, because Mendes can’t act, but Williams was magic with Gosling in ‘Blue Valentine’.

Let’s hope Cianfrance finds his edge again third time around, he’s a fine talent. I hope he’s got the police procedural out of his system, he’s better on relationships.

A really terrific review.

Unfortunately it didn’t have the same profound impact on me. The remarkable coincidences eventually wore me down. And for all the richness in character the sum was less than the parts.

Blue Valentine was non-linear and yet had such a sharp simplicity. This was exhaustively linear and overblown as a result, for mine.
