Michael Millett, presently deputy editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, has confirmed that he has been offered the editorship of the Canberra Times.
“I’m still making up my mind,” he said to me a few moments ago, but declined to say what factors he was weighing up in making the decision.
An announcement is expected towards the end of next week.
The other man whose name was in the hat, deputy editor of the Canberra Times Bruce Jones, this morning said he had no comment to make. He has told colleagues he was not as keen on the position as some had supposed.

This comment references today’s Crikey article. It always irks me when so called “experts” pontificate on what Canberra is. To the big city sophisticates from our (very provincial) state capitals we are a “country town” where the main industry is public service. In reality we are a small city where political power is centred and where the main industry is politics. The old state capitals don’t like to admit that political power is centred here and the Crikey comments underscore that. The Canberra Times needs to become a mini Washington Post as the state papers cannot get away from provincial thinking and only the Australian and AFR raise their eyes above their navels.
