Just a quick response to Jin Jirrie's post - Sharyn Lock's blogs from Gaza, which were originally posted on http://talestotell.wordpress.com, are now available as an edited volume from Pluto Press, along with photos and other information on international solidarity work in Gaza and the West Bank. See http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gaza-Beneath-Bombs-Sharyn-Lock/dp/074533024X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257099193&sr=8-1

Wow that response by Jin Jirrie is rather excellent cross referencing. I might dip in there a bit.

Your point about the air strike 4 Nov, US election day, is well made as reported 5th Nov 08 by the UK Guardian. When combined with the very low or nil rocket and mortar fire in July, August, Sept, and October 2008 despite the ongoing food blockade, it really is a very poor reflection on Israel's political leadership and the power of the rabid militant squatter movement.

Israel as a polity have really lost their way I think, morally, strategically, politically. And that makes me really nervous. Olmert facing corruption charges running a war. IDF infiltrated with racist bigots squatters who seem to have 30% support nationally in Israel.

Shin Bet boss reported in Haaretz that the squatters would take up arms against it's own police force and government if prevented from stealing Arab land.

Financial crisis likely to cut off the USA gravy, at least to some degree. Economic sanctions against Israel until it breaks the illegal squatter movement are highly justified in my view.

"Much of the coverage I came across on social media in Gaza's [sic: Israel's war on Gaza] war emphasised that Israel in particular was using these platforms to 'get its point of view across'." Quite right, Matt, and it's been using the ms media in exactly the same way. So Margaret, even though we all know there's a propaganda war going on over Israel's Gaza genocide, are you still prepared to give the local Israel lobby the benefit of the doubt over Backman? That all it was doing was just contesting his alleged anti-Semitism?

I participated Israel's first global twitter conference - you can follow my commentary on and recorded interactions with the Israeli consulate's hasbara here:

http://www.kadaitcha.com/2008/12/30/israel-on-twitter/
http://www.kadaitcha.com/2008/12/31/israelconsulate-responses-government-pr-on-twitter/

The Consulate later provided a lengthy, deceptive response in regard to the breaching of the cease fire on 4 Nov, to which I responded (and which they posted on their blog) -

http://www.kadaitcha.com/2009/01/08/dancing-the-hasbara-tango/

During Israel's Gaza assault, brave Palestinians were still blogging and twittering when they had power - #gaza was the hash used by most. That 'room' was attacked by Israeli bots spewing propaganda, and several folks spent time having the bots removed.

For a very moving twitter narrative with deeply insightly political content from within Gaza, see @rafahkid - you can also read his blog at RafahKid ft. Rafah Pundits

Other blogs from within Gaza itself include journalist Sameh A. Habeeb's From Gaza - don't miss his stunning photos which are at http://picasaweb.google.com/sameh.habeeb

Also worth a visit is Dr. Mona El-Farra's blog

The Palestinian narrative and contacts have been there - yet few journalists outside the excellent Al Jazeera, and none in Australia of which I am aware, have bothered to explore them. This is an injustice to those who are suffering and have suffered and died in Gaza due to Israel's 40 year long illegal occupation.

Neither has the narrative of Australia's own courageous volunteer Sharyn Lock who was present all through the attack been picked up on.

Understanding hasbara is essential if Israel's social media is to be dissected successfully - see:
