More on the argy bargy between Crikey and News Limited on the issue of whether there are or are not cuts and redundancies in the wind. Yesterday several media outlets reported that the second quarter results, due to be released tomorrow, are likely to disclose a fall in earnings of about 30 per cent for News Corporation.
And what does Rupert say?
He warned that News Corp, which owns newspapers such as The Australian and The Daily Telegraph, was on the path towards “leaner operations” and “across-the-board cuts”.
No pleasure in this one, but understanding what’s happening is hardly rocket science.
The goss is that planning these cuts is being kept very tight within News Limited, in the hope of not spreading too much gloom, misery and pessimism.

I’ve just read your ‘no Britney’ comment and thoughtat last – news without the bullshit
Thanks
Margaret, nothing to do with News Corp but I’m just dropping in to this comments box to say how much I’m enjoying your blog. I’m a bit surprised by the low comments numbers so far, compared the the depressingly sub-literate and bile-laden sprays that turn up on some of the ‘blogs’ attached to newspapers, but if I were you I’d put it down partly to the fact that most of your readers probably think before they type and partly to the fact that you’re (very refreshingly) not writing inflammatory opinion but providing incredibly interesting facts. I imagine most of your readers are just saying ‘Ooh, isn’t that interesting’ rather than reaching for their keyboards.
Thanks Kerryn! Any tips about what is happening in your neck of the woods greatly appreciated. As for the numbers of comments, I think journos are watchers, not participators, by nature. Also in some newsrooms reading this blog is not smiled on by management. I get a lot of private email correspondence.
Bollocks Kerryn! I am very interested in Margaret’s opinion. It’s just that I usually hone in on the happenings in Canberra when I’ve finished my work. I am not a touch typist. I like to double -check my check-spellers (because American spelling is very suss.). With the result I’m too bugg-red to do much commenting. ‘Ooh, isn’t that interesting’ is about as far removed from my philosophy as it is possible to get. Also, unusually, I had a fairly quiet day to day and I started blogging this morning.
Your name may be Goldsworthy. Perhaps you have just devalued it?
PS: Crikey, have I always been moderated? Or did I say something horrible recently? After two years that maybe a little unlikely.
Cheers
V.
