News Limited and Fairfax

More in the Crikey email about the News Limited features restructure today, with editorial director Campbell Reid having granted me a not very informative interview, that nevertheless contains some significant denials.

But in the meantime, Fairfax is about to go through an upheavel, with CEO Brian McCarthy expected to make an announcement today or tomorrow about his new management structure.

The word is that McCarthy is considering a flatter structure with a smaller number of direct reports to him. Who and what are the subjects of endless speculation, with lots of names being gossiped about as being potentially surplus to requirements.

The journos are worried that the announcement will also contain news about sections and bureaus being amalgamated, but others tell me that such lowly stuff is not necessarily on the agenda for this announcement.

Interesting that the News approach is to centralise everything in Sydney. Anyone senior in News Ltd in Melbourne or Brisbane knows it’s about control, not quality. Want to start something up? Get Melbourne to do it properly and roll out the template. Evidence … mX, travel sections, Sunday Magazine. With the exception of some very talented staff on the Australian, the rest of Holt St is filled with time-servers, whingers and amateurs. The Sunday Tele is the worst paper I have ever worked on. And why Sydney? Space is cheaper just about anywhere alse.

I would have thought a “flatter” structure would result in *more* direct reports to the CEO. No wonder people are worried.
