Stuff we like: Virtual video store clerks and cute things falling asleep

Crikey intern Michael Griffiths wraps-up our favourite things for the day:

Economic collapse #1. Now that the dust has settled and everybody’s clear that this financial crisis we’re in is real, nasty and probably prolonged, it’s worth reading the Wall Street Journal’s take on how we got to this point. Note: “What we ended up with is a failure of government, which we have erroneously termed a failure of capitalism.” Draw your own conclusions.

Economic collapse #2. It seems that the tentacles of the recession have now captured their most poignant victims — sex tourists, brothel users and Internet porn fans. Is there anything at all we can do to stop this headlong slide into propriety?

Can’t decide what to watch. Who do you ask if you want a movie recommendation? The movie nerds who work in the video stores, right? Or, because it’s not the ’80s anymore and video store clerks don’t really exist now, you can check out this interwebs site which aggregates thousands of recommendations from former video store clerks. It’s still a bit buggy, but the idea is cool.

Sting in the tail. As if ’70s German metal band Scorpions don’t have to deal with enough slurs against their good name, the Wikipedia page for their Virgin Killer album was recently blocked by some Internet providers after a group called the IWF (Internet Watch Foundation) said it may constitute “potential illegal child sexual abuse”. Well, karma has been rebalanced and the page can be viewed in all its glory again. Let’s just hope this vigilant Internet censorship doesn’t spread.

Awwww. As recommended by our in-house animal lover, First Dog on the Moon, the name of this site pretty much sums up what’s inside: Cute Things Falling Asleep. Teeters on the borderline between super-cute and “make it stop”.
