Stuff we like: Newspaper stocks and the elements of spam

Things we’re enjoying today:

Buy newspaper stocks. Who’d invest in a dying industry like newspapers? Harper’s publisher John R. MacArthur would, because, he argues, ads on the Internet will never be as pervasive as printed ones, and advertisers will realise this. And because he’s a print publisher.

Midget stunt a winner. Today’s PR ploy of the day comes from a British gym who have replaced their dumbbells with people, allowing their clients to lift midgets instead of weights. The world’s media love it, as do sites like Digg. We all get a little bit stupider.

The elements of spam. McSweeney’s offer advice to email spammers from writing bible The Elements of Style:

16. Use definite, specific, concrete language.

Generalities enervate your writing; strong details invigorate it.

In short order, you’ll notice enhanced length and girth.

What is meant by “short order”? A week? A month? The imprecision is suspicious. Further, avoid bankrupt modifiers such as enhanced. Rewrite with exactness.

Your exactly one week away from an 11-inch jizz stick.

Listening to Peanuts. “When Schroeder pounded on his piano, his eyes clenched in a trance, the notes floating above his head were no random ink spots dropped into the key of G. Schulz carefully chose each snatch of music he drew and transcribed the notes from the score” says the IHT, who look at the meaning behind the music in Peanuts strips.
