Tony Abbott was not known, during his time as health minister, for seeing eye-to-eye with public health advocates. Tonight he takes to the stage at the University of Sydney to debate leading public health advocate Professor Mike Daube.
Their subject: Welcome back nanny? Civil liberties vs the public good.
The timing is perfect (and not only because of Liberal leadership jockeying) but because of the anticipation surrounding the recommendations of the Preventative Health Taskforce.
The debate will be chaired by Crikey and Croakey correspondent, Prof Simon Chapman.
At the Eastern Ave Lecture Theatre, University of Sydney, from 6pm.

‘Big Ears’ Tony has for most of his political life been the ‘jack rabbit’. Howard pulled him from the back benches after he did the crunch number on Pauline Hanson. He is the Liberal’s stooge and sent forth into the fray because people take pity on him because his lack of real talent is so obvious. As a minister in the Howard Government, his perfomance was the same as any foot soldier he did as he was told. He has no latteral thought process other then to flap his big ears and hone in on weakness so as to give him strength of purpose to survive. He greatest claim is that he has survived to date….but surely, someone should put him out of his misery and let us all move on rather than have to put up with his ‘clap trap’ any more.
