When I saw the production I was in the third row and could hear him struggling for his lines and he just didn't have the panache for the character. But I disagree with your view of Mitchell: I thought she played the right measure of straight woman/acid tongue. Ensemble was well cast—enough energy in the hijinks, enough cheek in the wit.
