Firstdogonthemoon presents the Animal of the Day

Pheasant Coucal (Centropus phasianinus)

The marvellous bird shown in the photograph below is apparently a Pheasant Coucal (also known as a Swamp Pheasant). You would think, at least from the perspective of a nominative determinist that it would be a pheasant, and yet it is not. It is in fact a member of the cuckoo family.

Unlike a cuckoo however, [...]

A bird we saw this morning…

Here we are on Magnetic Island. Dad has a place. It is hot and I am on holiday. Blogging continues of course.
Today’s animal is a bird we saw this morning.
As big as a small loaf of bread with feathers and a long tail.
It landed on the front fence, flapped a bit and jumped onto the [...]

Kevin Rudd’s Cat (Jasperus arsehatus)

It’s sunday night and there I am, working doggedly trying to come up with a cartoon about bees for Crikey. Wandering about the internet looking for possibly humorous bee facts, like for instance, did you know that bees…. but no, that’s for another time. Prime Minister Rudd is appearing on Rove shortly so I have [...]

Robert Murphy (Football Sparkle Fairy)

Robert Murphy is a 26 yr old Australian Rules Football player who wears the number 2 jersey for the Western Bulldogs football club. He lives in Melbourne, with a number of humans and his dog Arthur, who is a miniature sausage dog. While playing football, Robert spends most of his time in and around the [...]

The Giant Prickly Stick Insect (Extatasoma tiaratum)

This is the second Giant creature in our two part series “Two Giant Creatures”.
Today we are taking a moment to appreciate the The Giant Prickly Stick Insect (Extatasoma tiaratum). It is also sometimes known as the Spiny Leaf Stick Insect and McLeay’s Spectre. Why pay homage to this particular beast? Because it is enormous and funny [...]

The Australian Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama)

The Colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) is a really really enormous squid, the biggest in fact. It is even bigger than the Giant Squid (Architeuthis dux et al) which is also really really enormous. They are both however, way bigger than the Australian Giant Cuttlefish even though, as cuttlefish go, it is gigantic (1.5 metres).
And the [...]

The Lesser Sooty Owl (tyto multipunctata)

Welcome to the firstblogonthemoon. The main theme for this blog will be my highly uneducated views on flora and fauna, specifically, a daily investigation of a particular beast, phenomena or thingy. This blog will be characterised by a lackadaisical approach to research and occasionally simply making things up. It will at times have a relationship [...]
