[...] That’s frustrating enough, but in June this year eMusic adjusted its subscription model, effectively doubling the cost of individual tracks. It’s still a pretty good deal, but the new model sparked a lot of anger among eMusic die-hards, mainly due to the fact that the new pricing seemed to coincide with eMusic getting access to the Sony catalogue. (Tim Dunlop dissects the situation in more detail over at Crikey.) [...]

Tim. In the quest to search out new music/artists for Jenny and others on this blog, I might suggest two sites which showcase new music releases:
The first artistdirect.com
Artistdirect also has an offshoot site named Ultimate Band List, url UBL.com, which states 'UBL as the ultimate online destination for independent and unsigned bands, their music, their fans' . . . etc.

Hope this info is helpful.
Ciao.

Hey, I didn't think that there was anyone else in Aust who knew of or even used E-Music - I've been a member for a year or so.
I agree that it is a great site - I can find many of the supposedly lost and hard-to-find dub and roots reggae of my mis-spent youth and lots of new stuff I never even suspected existed.
Unsure about how the recent proposed changes will affect me - they start next month - I can always vote with my feet. And there are real gaps in some areas - perhaps related to DRM issues. Only other gripes are that some of the source masters, and/or dubs - are a bit naff at times, and sometimes their reviews & comments are incorrectly posted etc. But their 'dozen' guides are good and most of the reviews are helpful. And thanks for the tip about audiobooks. And finally, can we find someone who can write for Australians as David Pogue does in the NYT for the Yanks?

Jenny,

I'm finding that CDBaby.com is one of my favourite music sites particularly for indie/relatively unknown artists. Lots of Aussies have CDs up there.

I am personally boycotting all forms of electronic communications except eight-track ROM until the full Beatles catalog is available for download.

I've obviously been on another (musical) planet for ages, as I only just found out about emusic, and the party's already dying, or so it seems. Love the idea of following one song/artist to another, and discovering new sounds. Itunes is very vanilla, the DRM is annoying and indie artist list limited.
I'd be interested to know if any of the other services are a) available in Australia and b) any good. Having said that, I still quite like the CD notes. The Buddy and Julie Miller 'Written in Chalk' release is presented with flair. With artists such as these, you feel you're seeing the product how they wanted it to be - great recommendation Tim. Just about to start working my way through United Universal House of Prayer, and hoping to get some of Julie's solo albums, too.

Cheers
