Hey Eric – don’t know if you are back reading this, but thanks for the clarification about your comments. (Yours too Tim). Good to know you were not having a go. SMH National times had a go at Britney today as well – their position was that legislation probably doesn’t make sense, but that disclosure by the artist was the ethical position. I agree with that stance, but then “ethics” and “artists” are sometimes a way apart.

Just in passing, I’ve seen Dylan three times and I seriously don’t think he said a word between songs at any of them.

I can remember being at Bob gigs where people complained “Its wasn’t like the records”

So possibly even Bobby fans would prefer lip syncing.

I’m not convinced there was any Ms Spears fans who were disappointed she didn’t actually sing “live” – they might have been disappointed she gave a lacklustre performance, or the concert wasn’t long enough, but does anyone really follow Ms Spears for the grain of the voice?

What disclaimer would Kraftwerk, Eno, Laurie Anderson, Ryuchi Sakamoto, Pink Floyd have to put on their tickets.

lol, yep, he’s not a big one for acknowledging the audience. I saw him in 2001, and I think he introduced the band before the final song and that was about it for interraction.

Didn’t matter though.

John, I can see what you mean, but to me, the points you raise about the complexity of working what is acceptable pre-recorded stuff for a gig (concert, show, whatever) and what isn’t, is precisely the point that mitigates against legislation. Let the fans of whichever artist decide. Artists will soon get the message. (I don’t want Lucinda lip syncing, but I don’t have any problem with Laurie Anderson using tapes etc)

So like I said in the piece, on the surface it seems like a no brainer — insist that people be told in advance, let them make an informed decision — but I really don’t think it is that big a deal, nor something that is that easily sorted out.

Would also like to point out, like Eric, that I wasn’t saying it doesn’t matter bc Britney isn’t “real” music. I’m not a fan, but if people like her stuff, that’s fine by me. They probably hate some of the stuff I love. Arguments about good versus bad music are right up there, for me, with tussles about whether Sydney is better than Melbourne or whether the Atlantic is a better ocean than the Pacific. So no put down was intended.

apols no insult intended…i don’t mean that one is trash and the other isn’t..i mean that the “form” of the events are inherently different…

in broadway musicals the male and female leads could not dance full on and sing at the same time..it just isn’t possible…so singers were planted in the wings to take over the vocals whenever needed…the “form” of the show requirred dancing and singing full on..all the time…it had to be a trick..nobody could pull that off..let alone nite after nite…or in Brits case…city after city…not possible..she has to sync..it is in the nature of the beast…REM don’t do full on huge dance numbers e?.their form is different…well it was when i last looked..

Hey Eric – it might be blindingly obvious to you, but who is to say where the line is placed – you’ve highlighted my point exactly. Does someone arbitrarily determine that one act is trash, therefore lip syncing is expected, whilst another is more critically acclaimed, therefore they have to disclose? You are getting into the realms of “my band is cooler than your band”, which ain’t gonna get anyone anywhere. Disclosure for all, and then let the punters decide I would recommend. BTW – you don’t have to pull quotes from my posting to make a comment. That’s just silly.

oh…sorry…and i have no doubt that REM & U2 do use click tracks, especially in the huge venues…does that make them fakes to…because they can’t keep “proper” time?

they are not faking anything – it is not possible to do these kind of shows without miming (as it used to be called)

“at least paying concert goers”

it is not a concert

“artists honesty or integrity”

the events have nothing whatsoever to do with art or artists

& REM are a band….Britney is a media personality/construct…this seems blindingly obvious to me…a different set of rules apply i think….
