There must be some independent standard of what makes news … I’d have thought there would be certain baseline commonalities between two newspapers in one city, things that happen that ought be reported. Are newspapers a mirror of surrounding events? Or something altogether more cynical and contrived?

How exciting to watch Julie Bishop take the reins in Question Time today, wearing what appears to be one of Bob Menzies’ old suits. Petrodollars! Government banks! Loans Council! Bring back RFX Connor! ‘Will the treasurer rule out the establishment of a new government bank?’ What a stirring return to form.

Sting is in Melbourne tomorrow to do his Dowland thing. Any reservations one might have about this coupling should be set at nought by the companion thought that it is wonderful to have such lovely music so lovingly restored. That said, I think I’ll always be a Deller man. Although Sting has much nicer teeth.
