Taking Africa by storm is Pope Benedict.
As The Times online reports:
The Pope courted further controversy on his first trip to Africa today by declaring that condoms were not a solution to the Aids epidemic – but were instead part of the problem.
In his first public comments on condom use, the pontiff told reporters en route to Cameroon that Aids “is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, and that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems”.
What a force for good and reason is modern Catholicism.

Does the Vatican synod snigger when he comes out with these clangers – surely someone tells him he’s irrelevant.
Why is it that compulsive lying is an accepted part of the Church’s hierarchy? And why do moderate Catholics not criticize such outrageous statements?
Another such lie was “The AIDS virus is roughly 450 times smaller than the spermatozoon. The spermatozoon can easily pass through “the net” that is formed by the condom,” Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family, told the BBC’s ‘Panorama’ programme in 2003″*.
