Review: Ross Noble in Nonsensory Overload | Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Filling a 50 minute stand-up show is no easy task. Filling two hours — even with a 20 minute break in the middle — requires absolutely confidence.
First-class British import Ross Noble is choc full of that.
At St Kilda’s gorgeous Palais Theatre Noble schooled his audience with a veritable masterclass of comedy, his trademark spiralling streams of storytelling leading to some of the best audience interaction you’ll see anywhere on the circuit.
Noble implored his audience to ask him a question — any question — and twisted each one into a knee-slapper.
“Would you prefer to fight two horse sized ducks or ten duck sized horses?” asked one impish attendee. Nobody in the crowd would be capable of explaining Noble’s sprawling response other than using words like “insanely funny.”
Memorable bits included a rumination about how people always tilt their heads to the side to intelligently consider something (Stephen Hawking being the prime example) and a recurring theme involving Larry Emdur riding naked on a horse.
Sometimes the loquacious one man laugh factory over-stepped the mark by over-praising his own material, prepping the audience for jokes that aren’t quite as good as he thinks they are. But with skill like his, such a vice is easily forgivable.
