Some (unanswered) questions for South Australian Premier Mike Rann

Over the weekend just passed I found this reference to the LIVESTRONG trademark in the Initial Public offering (the IPO) for the US “content farmer” Demand Media that seems to raise yet more questions. “The Lance Armstrong Foundation is a party to a license agreement with us under which the Lance Armstrong Foundation grants us a perpetual, worldwide, exclusive license to use the LIVESTRONG.com brand, trademark and certain website names associated therewith, including LIVESTRONG.com.”

Bird of the Week – a Cooper’s Hawk keeps an eye on the culture vultures at the Library of Congress

“We’ve had birds fly in here before, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a predator,” the Library of Congress representative said. “We have to lure the bird out, but the problem the Cooper’s Hawk likes their food to be on the hoof. I’m not sure we will release live pigeon or mouse in here.” The Fish and Wildlife Services will likely be tasked with getting the hawk out, though many area falconers have also offered their services.

Did the LIVESTRONG Cancer Research Centre pay Lance Armstrong for use of his trademark?

Earlier this week I sent a number of questions to staff at the Flinders Medical Centre (Flinders) in Adelaide concerning the relationship between Flinders and organisations closely associated with it, particularly the LIVESTRONG™ Cancer Research Centre, and Mr Lance Armstrong and organisations associated with him. Those organisations include the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), which, according [...]

Armstrong to quit TdU & leave legacy as “saddest deception in sports history”?

I won’t insult my readers by trawling through the sycophantic puffery that is passed off as serious commentary on Lance Armstrong in the Australia media. You can pick up plenty of that for yourself in the tabloids and on the TV. And the broadsheet coverage isn’t much better. Most of that reporting – and the guff spouted by politicians – treats Armstrong as if he was some God come to earth on two wheels to lead us into some glorious future after the “war” on cancer has been won.

An open letter to Lance Armstrong…

So I’ll take a stab in the commercially-confident-and-very-secret-dark and say you’ll be pitching for $AU2.5 million for your visit to South Australia this year. Again, if I’m wrong please feel free to correct me – or get someone from Ranny’s office to drop me a line.

Frog of the week: Desert Tree Frog, Litoria rubella

After a minute or two they would retreat back into their refuge under the loose bark. there was a lot of other wildlife about that night, including a cute little Sandy Inland Mouse, Pseudomys hermannsbergensis and the anthropological double team of the Centralian Tree Frog, Litoria gilleni and a lot of the immeasurably ugly – but cute as hell with it – Spencer’s Burrowing Frog, Opisthodon spenceri.

Bug of the week: The Jewel bugs in my front yard

A few weeks ago I noticed a cluster of these bright red and green Jewel bugs on one of the branches of the Witchetty bush and over the past month or so I’ve seen several sets of eggs laid, the tiny bugs emerge and then grow through several moultings before spreading around the yard and beyond.
