A look at all things northern…and some of the myths behind them.

Photo essay – is this the most beautiful building in the world?

The Walt Disney Concert Hall. Photo from www.laphil.com

This is of course a building designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry. When I first saw it after I stumbling up Bunker Hill from the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles one day last week I thought it a poor knock-off of another of Gehry’s buildings, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, which I had the pleasure of spending time with a few years ago.

You can find out a bit more about the Walt Disney Concert Hall at the Los Angeles Philharmonic website here.

At first blush I thought that the Walt (I can’t think of another name for it) just didn’t “fit” its site in the same way that the Bilbao Museum does so effortlessly, but after spending a couple of hours clambering over and inside it – one of the joys of this building is that you can get right up close and personal with it along a series of walkways that wander around, up and through it – I think that this building stands alone as being a thing of absolute beauty.

After a while you lose the other buildings crowded around it, instead being drawn to the subtle and ever-changing play of light on the stainless steel walls.

Here are some of my thoughts – as usual – one camera, one lens.

I’m sorry Bob. Yours are great photos but I like the subject of ‘After the Wedding’ so much more. The above post took me straight back to fraught days in the metalwork class at high school.
