Snail of the Week – the Jessie Gap Hairy Snail
Fires trash these mini-plant communities – bushfires are the main threat to snails here – it directly cooks the animals and destroys their food. In the long run I’d like get around to trying to identify some of the main crust plants they eat but that might be impossible. I’m told there hasn’t been a lichenologist through central Australia in living memory so I suspect few species here are named.

The flying foxes flew away and circled over the Arafura Swamp, finally settling hanging upside down from trees growing along the banks. They were the first creatures to cut the penises of their young males and the circumcision ceremonies performed on young boys today is accompanied by a repetition of the songs sung by the flying foxes as they initiated the original ceremony.
