The Air Caraibes incidents may well contain clues that prove to be very relevant to solving the AF447 riddle. Thanks for posting the link, which also links to the original accident report.

We can’t ignore the possibility that the pilots made, or were encouraged to make, what was a terrible error of judgement brought undone by contradictory advice by Airbus in its unreliable airspeed check list.

The tail section was found away from the area of the storm indicating maybe that the pilot did try to avoid the storm cell.
