Virgin Oz orders 737-8 MAX, indicates shift to wide-bodies

Virgin Australia hints at a shift to a higher proportion of wide-bodied jets in its fleet in its announcement of an order for 23 Boeing 737-8 MAXs.

The statement is published below.

The 737-8 MAX is the new engine technology size match for the 57 Boeing 737-800s in its fleet as of June.

Virgin Australia is also acquiring more Airbus A330-200s for trunk domestic and regional international routes, although by the time the MAX effect brings improved fuel efficiency to its operations the A330 line may be in its last years, overtaken by the A350 line, and presumably, the latest iterations of the Boeing 787 family.

Virgin America was the launch customer for The A320 neo, which of course has a choice of GE/Snecma or PW geared fan engines.
While they are separate airlines, perhaps they are seeing different things
