Reflections on the Miracle of Democracy at Work in the Greatest Nation on Earth

Idiot box

For the purpose of having something to hang a new open thread off, I hereby present unilluminating 15-second ads for the Liberal candidates for Stirling and Cowan, which ran during Perth news bulletins this evening.

Where did Uncle Buck go he was announced policy yesterday then no follow up?

It appears to be Brian Loughnane’s current strategy – hit and fade missions, where Ministers make big splashes (Abbott, Downer, Turnbull for a while and now Hockey) and then *bammo* they’re gone again!

Broadband is a massive issue everywhere – even in inner Melbourne, where, by the way, it’s fairly sh$#e. It’s like building railways last century. For business poeple it’s a serious big deal. Not to mention education.

Q: When is “sorry” not an apology?

    A: When Howard says it.

His lawyer-speak is going to go down real well with Joe & Mary Bogan. No doubt they’ll recall that the PM makes no apologies about it when the notice from the bank comes in with their new mortgage rate.

I reckon he’s sounding more and more like Billy McMahon with each passing day.

I’ve a couple of rumours suggesting there’s a fair swing against Smirky in Higgins. It wouldn’t look good for Costello’s leadership ambitions if his seat becomes as marginal as Bennelong or Wentworth.

    Keating wouldn’t change one vote.

In 83, the LIbs ad campaign, was Don’t trust the ALP, It’s another Whitlam Show. (or something like that – I was only 11!)

Whitlam was as divisive as Keating, but after 11 years. Geex, everyone knows he’s not running for PM, and if you haven’t heard interest rates went to 17% under him, well go back under your rock.

re 139: Broadmand and technology are huge issues. Overseas students wonder what’s wrong. Some years ago my sister-in-law taught at a Chinese University. Took video tapes of Shakespeare with her as that was the norm here. They had to find a VCR in archives or equivalent. This illustrates where we are still stuck today.

Also Rudd tonight praised Fisher, Curtin , Hawke and Keating!! For economic reform. And contrasted Howard Costello as being asleep at the wheel!

I seriously think DP at the DT has been slowly been shifting the vibe. I reckon Howard’s performance today is the final reason they need to break cover and switch to Rudd. I never thought I’d see the day. I wonder if Rudds visit with uncle Rupe in the US involved something along the lines of “you deliver FTTN and well back you in”?

If you asked the swinging voters to choose between tax cuts now and broadband in the future, they’d take the money every time.
Interest rate rises on the other hand, now that’s an issue. But the question is what’s the best way for Labor to exploit it?

WTF… So the Rodent is now trying to say that if Rudd gets in everyone is gonna stop having kids and head for the divorce courts… Could someone please confiscate Howards dementia drugs, cos it is becoming quite sad.

Yes, I heard the piece on Nicole. I posted some threads ago, the Messenger front pager on her. Seems there is a gathering of sympathy, which includes Brighton Secondary, clearly.

There has been more in her favour, Advertiser recently.

Won’t be easy, however, as I have said earlier too, the understandably (labor) antagonists to her selection, have decided to run with her.

While I kinda get the point he was trying to make, most people won’t understand and it just sounds like a wacky scare campaign (by which I mean even wackier than usual). Cossie must be kicking himself daily for not challenging last year.

Based on some of the interactions I’ve had with lawyers, I’m not totally convinced that a law degree is proof of braininess …
But that’s a little beside the point anyway with Nicole Cornes. She’s become (not entirely through her own fault) a bit of a “soft target” for some of the press. You know, it’s a slow news day, let’s pick out some silly thing she said this week.
I’m sure she’s not a bimbo but I reckon she will underperform the overall Adelaide swing.

Costello didn’t, hasn’t and never will have the balls to challenge for anything. He is singulary the most pathetic excuse for a human ever to grace parliament. I think Turnbull will hold on in Wentworth and lead the Liberals to the next election. Turnbull is their future.

BTW my sources say regional Qld is going ballistic with the National party and are feed up with them being the spare wheel to the Libs. Apparently there will be a big coalition dust up by mid next week with the Nats distancing themselves from Howard.

It it is interesting Adam that you call the local approach of the Liberals “disgraceful” because they aren’t technically responsible for local issues, yet you are quite happy to support Mr Rudd’s “plan” to take over public hospitals.

If Costello had challenged after the secret ‘deal’, middle of last year, lost, then gone to the backbench, around feb/march with no able deputy, polls bad, backbenchers wold have come round.

“Do you want to risk the progress we have made as a society off the back of a strong economy? A society where more and more Australians are moving from welfare to work? A society that for all of the disadvantages that still exists directs more support in relative terms to those on low incomes than virtually any other developed country in the world? A more confident and stable society as indicated by measures or indicators like _higher fertility, lower divorce rates_ and lower numbers of children growing up in jobless households.”

Incidentally, in the same speech Howard demonstrated one reason why interest rates and inflation are increasing under the current government.

“If Mr Rudd were of a mind to check the facts he would find that the mining sector now employs far more people working in research, innovation and other knowledge based industries than it does in actually digging up dirt.’’

He doesn’t seem to understand if we had a higher level of research and development we would have higher productivity, and thus lower inflation and interest rates.

Howard is so lame in his declining years that he presents speeches that demonstrate his failings.

Keating didn’t have the numbers against Hawke either, which is why he went to the backbench, remember? And then he said to Caucus, you can win with me or lose with him, take your pick. And lo, they chose, and chose wisely. That’s what Costello would have done if he wasn’t such a chicken. As Neville Wran said, you don’t get anything in politics without wading through blood to get it. That’s why Cosello will never be PM.

He is an embarresment as PM and has been for some time: thank God he is short enough and useless enough to have been ignored overseas for most of his tenure and people will not remember he was our Prime Minister, at all. I certainly will welcome amnesia when it comes my way for that very reason first and foremost.
