Reflections on the Miracle of Democracy at Work in the Greatest Nation on Earth

The day after the day after

That lucid analysis I promised two posts ago will still have to wait another day. In the meantime, I have added a new “photo finish” thread below for Dickson, where Labor’s lead is an uncomfortable 389 votes, to those already existing for Swan, Solomon, McEwen, Macarthur, La Trobe, Herbert, Bowman and the Victorian Senate. It would also be remiss of me not to note the very sad passing of Matt Price, taken far too young at 46.

Although the media is full of trolls, Cornes probs were her own doing. Simple. Could not put two words together or talk about policy. I actually felt sorry for her. The Labor Party should have realised this. Especially when she has rarely voted Labor.
    Cornes was a Cornflake.

I agree with you about the Tony Jones interview with Nicole Cornes. It was shameful. I was at an election party, and everyone watching the TV (many of whom were only occasional observers of politics) found that interview by Jones quite distasteful. And we really learned nothing about Cornes or her campaign, because his was trying to be smartarse with his questions.

1048 Voter Boy for someone who attacked me for homophobia doing the same about Pyne just confirms your own snivelling nature without mention of your apparent treachery towards people who are unfortunate enough to consider you a friend.

Sometimes wanker really is a very simple and concise way to describe an individual such as yourself.

Tony Jones lost a lot of credibility on Saturday night! I expect that sort of crap from a News Ltd hack, not an ABC journalist. The journalistic standards at the ABC have dropped alarmingly, thanks to the conservative majority on the board.

The booth I worked at did its job – 7.97% swing to Labor, when it needed 6.8%

I do believe Brendan Nelson will become the new Opposition Leader, now he will be quite interesting. The Liberal party’s purging of it’s social progressives in favor of it’s social conservatives might hurt them a lot in the next few years. To put it Australia is not the USA.

Re: Nicole. Reiterating yet again and again.

It is really sad, for Nicole and for we down and outs in Boothby, that the ALP was so shortsighted.

Not to have run a candidate, for at least the last year (s) and to drop Nicole in it.

With a decent run up, preparation, like any sport, Labor would have had the greatest of chances.

Even more so than say, Kingston.

Given the me doo, what? Southcott, Nicole would have romped it in.

    My personal apologies to Nicole.

Fine job, in my view. Against all odds. Not least Kevin Folly.

    ESJ,

I agree (finally) that the media tratment of women is horrendously misogynistic. The interview by Jones is a disgrace and the assumtion is that Nicloe Cornes simply has to wear it because that is how politics is.

Well frankly, it is time for everyone to move on, judge women on what they do and not what they look like.

It is interesting the so called labor people bagging Jenny Macklin on this blog. Yeah, sure she was dispappointed about losing the deputy leadership, but since then she has helped write the Education revolution Policy that Rudd has used as his pre eminent message. She has also spent a huge amount of time on the Aboriginal issue. Not particularly glamourous, but doing the grass roots work that made Labor electable last Saturday and more importantly, having a fig leaf to fly with now that they have office.

I am sure that everyone has their favourites for promotion, but Labor needs policy wonks as much as they need the publicity seekers.
