That lucid analysis I promised two posts ago will still have to wait another day. In the meantime, I have added a new “photo finish” thread below for Dickson, where Labor’s lead is an uncomfortable 389 votes, to those already existing for Swan, Solomon, McEwen, Macarthur, La Trobe, Herbert, Bowman and the Victorian Senate. It would also be remiss of me not to note the very sad passing of Matt Price, taken far too young at 46.

Coonan and Pyne on Lateline talking about accountability in Government. I didn’t know they could spell the word.
Better a late conversion than none at all, I suppose.
I hope Rudd addresses their concerns by announcing a proper enquiry into AWB, our involvement in the Iraq War, Children Overboard, SEIV-X, and a few of the other “acountability” failures of the past few years.
No doubt we can look forward to Helen and Chris supporting such enquiries wholeheartedly.
I was also surprised to hear Coonan speak of the Senate as a House of Review.
Again, a rather late conversion, but welcome none the less.
Especially after Howard’s use of it over the last three years as his own personal pissoir (as Alan Ramsey would say). Once they clean-off the urine stains, perhaps they can get down to holding a few decent Senate enquiries into some of the above.
If the Senate baulks, I hope Rudd has the balls to set up the appropriate Royal Commissions.
Business hated Labor and did not want it in government, and Labor should not suck up to them.

The Coalition needs to capture the youth vote.
That is going to be very difficult now with the loss of sk8erboy Vaile.”
How about Ruddock? He’d be the perfect Child Catcher.

Lateline Business going on about how much Big Business loves Labor. Funny that we didn’t hear that before the election.
markymarky 1052 ditto
Inquiries although i would like them, i do think it is time to move on.
1103 Youth vote
Libs dont need to catch the youth vote, they need to catch the everyone vote
My dream team:
Garrett – new Climate Change ministry junior to Environment Ministry
McKew – Housing Affordability (she had no probs with Mosman!)
Conroy – Communications, he finished off Coonan the twerp
Crean – yes I like the suggestion of trade
Roxon – Health
Tanner, Swan and Gillard as previously announced
Combet – Transport
Kelly – Defence (Tilley if he had won and by a long way)
Wong – Assistant Treasurer and Leader of Government in Senate
Smith – Education
Shorten – Trade (training for Foreign Affairs)
Crean – Foreign Affairs (go after a few years)
Rudd should make himself Immigration Minister for a while
Give Albanese Aboriginal Affairs
Find a rural member for Ag and for Regional Services. Rudd could be bold and offer it to Tony Windsor.
Make Katter the speaker
Marn Fergsn for Mineral Resources
Faukner for a decent Ministry
1101 Evan – Well said. I also burst out laughing when I heard Pyne say that the Libs never ever did backroom deals [like the Howard - Costello deal ...?]
The reason why Tony Jones has to put up with these Lib w#nkers is that Kev has his gang under strict orders to say nothing, so we all just have to sit here and put up with the losers snuffling about after the non-existent truffles.
And Jones was quite right to go after Nicole Cornes on Saturday. She was a very nice person but an intellectual lightweight and should never have been pre-selected. Maxine McKew is a quality celebrity ring-in – Cornes was not.
That said, I’m not surprised that Chris Pyne is talking about the Scumbags winning in three years if we lot are sitting about just talking about who will run their crowd. What about ours? Who’s gonna get what? Are we all just sitting here waiting for The Kev to hand out the spoils? I reckon he’d be happy enough after winning the 2010 election to hand over to Julia, so who comes after that?
And what of the first cabinet? There is a massive amount of talent in the new gang of Labor members, Greg Combet being the most impressive of the lot, outshining even the likes of Penny Wong, who has already proved herself.
This is far more interesting speculation. The problem is that Kev runs such a tight ship that the journos are not getting a peep out of anyone and therefore have to concentrate on the vanguished. As do we, it seems.
Hey, Marktwain – what do you make of Saturday’s Overington extravaganza?
Ok – does anyone thing there will be any big infratructure announcements like a resurrected VFT? I suppose Qantas and Virgin would be lobbying fiercely against it?

Agree on Crean for FM, but do you think Rudd would prefer a more ‘controllable’ person in that role given his own time there?
No Mark Twain all Labor members are currently looking for schools to visit in their electorates, silly me should have realised this is a far better thing to do.
Heather Ridout on Inside Business, this pathetic anti Labor right wing troll should not be allowed in the policy door at all.
VoterBoy, it was absolutely fantastic dramarama. Overington is seriously unhinged, so I understand why Mitchell hasn’t given her the boot immediately, but she needs some serious counselling. Then she should be eased out (no more WorkChoices, remember?) and told to write books. She’s not bad at that.
Gotta love WA – Lib primary vote was 46.29%, Labor’s 37.25%. Why are they so much more astute than everyone else?
Mt @ 1110,
Don’t agree with you about Jones going after Cornes. Losing candidates (of whatever colours) deserve respect on the night, surely. I thought Cornes was poor, and was fair game during the campaign, but afterwards it’s better to get off her case.
The people who dropped her in there without proper support, on the other hand …
Tend to agree that Combet is perhaps the best. Shorten and Marles are the factional thugs who can help him out.
No marky marky, they are not out looking for schools to inflict themselves upon. They are being wery, wery quiet, while Kev sorts things out. More news on Friday, one suspects.

You dont have to be to bright to dig holes’
How about “the next Liberal PM is probably still in nappies”?
Elect Vessel,
That proposal looks good, although I would make a few changes:
Albanese and Garrett should switch jobs
Livermore (from Capricornia) for Agriculture
Crean for Foreign Affairs
Wong for Trade
Faulkner for Defence (Kelly should go to Veterans Affairs first)
McKew for Arts
Shorten for Housing
Dreyfus for a parliamentary secretary position
Clare (in Blaxland) for Sport
@ 1050 Howard Hater Says:
Only 930 votes in it at the moment. If the Libs organise themselves a halfway decent candidate in 10/11 La Neale could be an early casualty which would be no bad thing.
Regarding WA
As bad as it looks- and relatively speaking it was bad
The state wide swing was higher than in Tas and ACT
Dyno, I’m a Labor supporter, but she shouldn’t have been put out there. It was a minor miscalculation and hopefully won’t be repeated. She’s a nice woman but she’d do better for the party writing her columns. And what is wrong with that?
Marktwain,
Marky is upset because Rudd hasn’t made the Communist Manifesto required reading for students as part of his education revolution.
Night all
Hi all,
I wasn’t sure if too many brothers on this site read my stuff, but I’d offer a few comments at this stage:
1) a quick thank you to “Just me” for his/her comments above. I also support John of Melbourne’s comments above…., actually way way above, my comments are six hours late, but I’ve had a hell of day at work today and am late on the scene as always
2) William, I know this may not sit well with you, but I need to respectfully suggest that your pseph site has irretrievably moved past the boundaries of its original psephological intentions. Thank you for the chance to contribute and discuss political issues, if you are in Melbourne sometime, and could do with a coffee (electorate of Higgins sometime) let me know
3) Hockey must announce he will stand for Deputy, A….S….A….P. He’s big, and he is boofy, but his heart beats strong and his tears on Saturday were genuine….he needs to stand for deputy right now and the Libs will be better off for it…….
Chris in LDN @ 1112. So, have you sent Maxine those flowers yet? And if so, what? (Don’t say chrysanths, don’t say chrysanths, don’t say chrysanths).
Actually, Shorten would be terrible for housing – maybe stick him into a Parliamentary secretary position first.
McLelland would be a better bet for housing – seems like a decent guy and held his own against Downer in the debate, so he should get a decent portfolio…
The next Liberal PM mightn’t even know he’s a Liberal yet.
I reckon there’ll be a few persona non grata from the BCA when it comes to dealing with Canberra.
Perhaps Heather and Hendy should consider retirements for family reasons.
I can’t imagine someone like Wong or Shorten giving them anything other than a coldly civil reception after their appalling conduct during the campaign.
The BCA’s gonna need some new talking heads if it wants to be taken seriously.

No. Apparently Downer has already ruled himself out.
The libs got smashed in the butt soo hard that the parents of the next Lib PM (who haven’t actually met yet) got a sore arse on Saturday and they dont even vote Liberal.
Is that the same Hockey who said that he would resign if Work Choices is changed. That will be a real winner for the Libs.
Mr Squiggle,
I don’t believe I’m saying this but I agree with you (on 2 points!!!)
First, completely agree with point 1 – thank you both to Just Me and John of Melbourne for your contributions (and everyone else btw). Made this site that much more interesting…
Second, Hockey should be deputy leader, but he won’t – he’ll probably end up in Shadow Environment or Education. As I said yesterday, Hockey is the next great Liberal leader (IMHO).
Dyno you are spot on.
Cornes is not a politician, perhaps the Pauline Hanson of dialogue.
Before workchoices the unemployment level was very low and it will stay low no matter what.
Time to swith TV off Heather Ridout is on and she is a person who has never been without and does not know what it is like to be poor.
Sorry Steven Kaye, but from the election results is obvious that although we have better beaches over here, we also have a higher %age of morons than other states. Sad really.
Still, we won, you lost, sit and spin baby!!!!!:)
Wouldn’t it be lovely if Kev sent Greg Combet out to meet the BCA first time out? He won’t, but it’s a nice thought.
Is Portland Bet doing odds on the Dream Team?
Late Line , Helen Coonan trashing Howard already. Stayed too long. Admitted Cabinet including her wanted him to go in Sept. Said for one reason or the other that did not happen……could that be because Costello was EVEN MORE unpopular with than Howard ?
Paul K, another capitalist who does not know the difference between communism and socialism and one who hates being called selfish because that is what he is.
I’d like to see all the Coaltion Ministers – those who were reelected, that is – to stay on as Shadows. That way they are right there on the front line once the bodies are dug up
when will Sportingbet pay me my money for ALP win plus Hasluck win plus Bennelong win plus Corangamite win?
steven kaye at post 1116 says: “Gotta love WA – Lib primary vote was 46.29%, Labor’s 37.25%. Why are they so much more astute than everyone else…”
Well, Steven, that’s easy.
You see, the West is exactly 11.5 years behind the rest of the country.
BTW have you considered changing your moniker to Danny?
Chris Whine. Helen Coo man. Lateline.
Standing up for the principle of Government accountability.
Sheeesh!

“I don’t feel so bad, it sucks but the ALP have elected its most conservative Labor leader. I fear that Rudd’s election has been an anti-climax for you Labor supporters.”
Of course it is, Glen. Krudd only won because he was a younger version of John Howard, minus the baggage of Workchoices. I think those baboons on the floor of the tallyroom on Saturday are in for a big shock; in fact, the shocks have already started, what with the departure of that harridan Clare Martin.
MM,
You have to learn this now – socialism is dead. Remember, it was Tony Blair who said “We are all Thatcherites now” – and I’m willing to bet Rudd follows that mantra.
BBD,
I am waiting for my payout on 5 bets at Sportingbet. I don’t think they’re paying out until the results are officially declared…
VBotWater – not yet -I figure she’ll be getting plenty of them now and I’m home for 4 weeks for baby jesus’ birthday, so thought I’d do it then……
Don’t worry they’ll be tasteful – probably some yeloew or cream roses, or something a bit more tropical or asian influenced
