[Any chance of a Murdoch by-election thread, William? All this political discussion is oh so interesting, but it’d be great to be able to get back to discussing the next election off the rank..]

Rebecca,

THe Libs are upset that the corpse is still warm when they announced it, and Bill Johnson has saids that the ALP are most likely not to run a candidate cos it's a safe Lib seat.

Expect a Melbourne Cup Field of independents and minor parties, with the Lib Candidate winning.

I seem to recall the poor electors of Peel having to wait months for a new elected representative... of course, that was necessitated not by death but by corruption and scandal. Puts the timing of the Murdoch by-election a bit into perspective.

<blockquote>I live in the former Murdoch electorate, and a monkey could win that seat for the Liberal party, and often has. Jarvis is therefore destined to be my next Lower House member, whether he has simian attributes or not.</blockquote>

I wouldn't want to get all defamatory about Jarvis, but based on my hazy memories of student politics in the mid-90's....let's just say that the joke about lawyers, sharks and professional courtesy comes to mind...

Thanks William.

I live in the former Murdoch electorate, and a monkey could win that seat for the Liberal party, and often has. Jarvis is therefore destined to be my next Lower House member, whether he has simian attributes or not.

With all due respect and sympathy to Mr. Sprigg and his family, I don't think he contributed much as my local member apart from his popularity amongst the Aussie Rules set and the cricket mob. He always seemed to be there at every sporting function, but I can't think of any actual contribution on his part that meant something.

Bit like me really, only a different sport....

The NA would be the Northern Alliance, a Liberal faction noted for its strength in the northern suburbs. Principals include Peter Collier (upper house MP who reportedly has his sights on Katie Hodson-Thomas's seat of Carine) and Colin Edwardes (husband of Cheryl and defeated candidate for Kingsley in 2005, reportedly hoping to take Collier's place in the upper house). Sprigg's electorate had been divided into safe Bateman and unsafe Jandakot and Sprigg got second prize, Bateman going to 33-year-old lawyer Anthony Jarvis. Robert Taylor of The West reckoned this was because "strategists believe Mr Sprigg, with his established profile, will have a much better chance of winning Jandakot than an unknown newcomer like Mr Jarvis, whose legal background would nevertheless be very welcome in Parliament", but Average Joe presumably thinks differently.
