Newspoll: 57-43

The Australian reports Newspoll has Labor’s lead back up to 57-43 after two fortnights at 55-45. No figures yet provided to back up its headline “Costello wanted as leader”. Hat tip yet again to James J.

UPDATE: Graphic here. It shows Peter Costello’s rating as preferred Liberal leader up to 41 per cent from 23 per cent in April (wrongly labelled in the graphic as April 2007), Brendan Nelson up from 15 per cent to 18 per cent and Malcolm Turnbull down from 25 per cent to 24 per cent – bearing in mind that 19 per cent has been freed up because Julie Bishop and Tony Abbott were not included in the question this time.

UPDATE 2 (31/7/08): Further attitudinal polling, including the finding that the Prime Minister is 3 per cent less experienced than he was six months ago.

UPDATE 3: Suggested Newspoll question format for next time: Is Rudd experienced? Has he ever been experienced?

It is possible to be both data secure and IP anonymous on the internet. SSL (end-to-end encryption), plus multiple layer proxies (anonymous IPs), plus anonymous email addresses, etc, make it virtually impossible to determine both what you are doing and who you are.

It is all legally available free or cheap, and not that hard to set up.

whilst most here (rightly) dismiss Captain Smirk’s ticker & econamic record , i do recall right up to election day , Fibs did hav a polling advantage over Labor in ‘econamic management

The electorate had the opportunity to vote for Costello at the last election and didn’t. I’m looking up the figures, but I am sure with Costello in the leadership of the coalition they would have gone even worse according to polling at the time.
That was the reason Howard decided to stay even after the debacle of Newspoll at Apec The polling was showing a bigger defeat with Costello.

yes you ar correct Sondeo A problem maybe with 2 way polling of same 2 Party Leaders is incumbant gets a polling advantage , and also Deputy gets a double whammy of being Treasurer Think Keating may hav had same problem , but Cossie last poll had huge lead over Nelson & Turnbull , is he a bigger danger in voters minds re financial credibility I wonder ?

    From Possum:

Focus group research is interesting and gives important insights and ammunition for a political strategists – but if you got every major political strategist worth their salt and asked them if they had to run an election and could only have either focus group research or quantitative data to do it with, London to a brick every one of them would opt for the quantitative data.

And what does the quantitative data tell us? It tells us that Costello wasn’t popular against Howard (who wasn’t popular against Rudd), and it tells us that he wasn’t popular against Labor leaders generally.

    http://possumcomitatus.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/oh-please-spare-us-the-costello-horsefluff/

I hope he does become leader because he will have to repudiate Howard in a big way, and when he does that he will have to repudiate those that kept Howard as leader, the very same folks that will vote for him as leader. :) )

The quantitative data mentioned by you in #1165 of Enemy Marsupial is consistent with my #1163 and am not disagreeing with that Although what i added is there were indeed inbuilt negotives in any polling then against Cossie vs Howard , same as there was with Polling of Hawke vs Keating before Keating challenged

All I’m simply asking is now , ie. 9 months after Sir Kevins win , based on voters minds now , who of th three represent a MORE difficult oppenent for Kevin07 to defeat in th future

Why would Costello want the job when he has little chance of winning and when he didn’t go for it when he could have been PM?

More than a decade as a top dog, will he waste three years just to lose an election? And suffer all the criticism when he does lose on top of what is earning now?

Will he want to work with the current bunch of no hopers half of whom hate the other half?

Is he willing to do the extra hard work it takes in Opposition without a bunch of departments on beck and call to give the information?

One thing about Rudd and his front bench, they all worked their guts out in opposition.

Piss Howard off by being a party spoiler?

I’ve hardly heard Costello speak on subjects other than finance. Has Costello ever been on Red Kerry and such getting a heavy grilling? He has coasted for decade in his hammock whilst the economy looked after itself and never had to face a tough examination like Howard or Nelson has. I wonder if he looks forward to that?

Maybe his colleagues are stirring up his patriotic spirit singing the LNP team song or he is just feeling too guilty to tell them yet.

    Shanahan:

The Newspoll support for Costello as Liberal leader has created uncertainty about that position continuing as small signs emerge of a poll improvement for the Opposition and real success comes in by-elections.

    ONE by-election.

Second, the economy has turned down dramatically, the financial markets are expecting a Reserve Bank policy reversal on interest rates that will confuse and anger voters, and the Government is faced with concerns about job losses and the possibility of recession.

An interest rate decline will “confuse and anger voters”, and if it does this will be Rudd’s fault?

Dennis is off into Fantasyland again. He’s praying for the economy to tank, then to blame that on Labor, all so that Costello can win a few brownie points in the polls. How low can Shanahan sink?

Notice they don’t have any actual quote from Mr Costello and all the actual comments they have which they purport to be support for a Costello leadership challenge are in fact nothing that hasn’t been said before (that is, senior Liberals wouldn’t mind having him on the front bench).
