Reflections on the Miracle of Democracy at Work in the Greatest Nation on Earth

Newspoll: 55-45

Breaking news: Newspoll has Labor’s lead down from 56-44 to 55-45. Since you all know about it by now, a link will suffice (although I will observe that Malcolm Turnbull’s ratings seem to have bottomed out). Here’s a first: Essential Research has the same result as Newspoll, with Labor’s lead plunging from 59-41 to 55-45. Further questions focus on the parties’ capacity to handle various issues, emissions trading schemes and climate change, and perceptions of politicians’ honesty (better than you might think).

Didn’t someone here predicted Faulkner for defence yesterday? Good call,

Possum hoped it would be Faulkner, but that was a wish, not a prediction.

Mr Grant said he knew politicians on both sides. He named the ALP's Bernie Ripoll and the former Liberal MP for Blair, Cameron Thompson, as among his political friends.

"They're just friends of mine. I'm not politically involved in any way.

"I've been to fundraisers with John Howard. If you walk into my office you'll see pictures of John Howard and myself."

Mr Grant said he spent two-and-a-half hours sitting beside Mr Howard at a function at the Ipswich Club, and had met him at the opening of Anzac Hall in Canberra.

Hmmm… there are some VERY serious questions that must be answered. Right?

Possum seems to be one step ahead of the curve quite a bit lately. Looks like the new strategy is coming unstuck quickly now too. Firstly, Fitzy then Rudd. Mmmm

But now there is no Rudd Recession – there is no core issue left to anchor a Coalition strategy for election victory. The debt argument without the Rudd Recession is an argument weak with political currency. Every time Turnbull points to the debt levels, Rudd will point to Australia being the only major economy that avoided recession. Every time Turnbull points to how long the debt will take to repay, Rudd will point to the unemployment levels in other countries that had recessions.

Turnbull’s only strategy to become PM has disappeared in a puff of statistics that went against him.

The realistic problem for the Liberal party now is how to carve out a new strategy in 18 months that minimises losses at the next election, simply because their current and now untenable strategy will deliver them nothing but grief at the ballot box if they choose to continue on with it.

Especially if that strategy is to continue to bring down Rudd. I would have thought that Labor has so much ammunition against the Coalition Members individually and collectively, up its sleeve, that this one could end up in an absolute massacre!
