Newspoll: 56-44 to Coalition

GhostWhoVotes tweets that the first post-carbon tax announcement Newspoll is one of the happier poll results for the government of the past fortnight: the Coalition’s two-party lead has eased to 56-44 from 58-42 a fortnight ago and support for the carbon tax is up six points to 36 per cent, with opposition down six to 53 per cent. On the primary vote, Labor is up two points to 29 per cent, the Coalition is down two to 47 per cent and the Greens are up one to 13 per cent. Julia Gillard has gained two points on approval to 32 per cent, but her disapproval remains stuck on 59 per cent. Tony Abbott is down three on approval to 39 per cent and up three on disapproval to 52 per cent, and has only just maintained his lead as preferred prime minister, dropping two points to 41 per cent with Gillard up two to 40 per cent.

We also had from the Herald-Sun yesterday a poll of 625 voters in Julia Gillard’s electorate of Lalor, conducted by JWS Research using its usual methodology of automated phone calls. The company has had a rather patchy record with its previous political polling, and the latest survey has been criticised for asking respondents attitudinal questions before proceeding to voting intention. It points to a 14 per cent swing against Gillard – solidly higher than the trend of recent national polling – although she still leads 58-42 on two-party preferred. Gillard has a four-point net positive approval rating among her own constituents, but the carbon tax is opposed by 43 per cent compared with 33 per cent in support. Fifty-seven per cent rate her “honest and trustworthy” (either quite or very), with 34 per cent opting for the negative.

UPDATE: Bernard Keane in Crikey reports the latest Essential Research result has the Coalition lead at 55-45, down from 56-44 last week and 57-43 the week before. Labor’s primary vote is up a point to 32 per cent, and the Coalition’s down one to 48 per cent. However, Tony Abbott’s policy of scrapping the carbon tax has the support of 50 per cent of respondents, with only 36 per cent opposed. There are also questions on trust in the media, which is found to have “slumped dramatically in recent months”. Trust in daily newspapers rates in the low 50s, television and radio news and current affairs in the high 40s and talk radio in the low 30s. With respect to specific outlets, the ABC and broadsheets are more trusted than the commercial media and tabloids. Fifty-eight per cent say the government should not allow one company to own the majority of Australia’s major newspapers – as News Limited does – which is up from 50 per cent since the question was last asked in November.

UPDATE 2: Full Essential Research report here.

  1. It’s worth noting that PollBludger was the first media agency to report Breivik’s comments about John Howard. It makes me wonder just how lazy the MSM really are.

The same media pinheads who penned screaming headlines over the last year about how poorly the Government had done in trying to sell the RSPT and the MRRT are now gibbering that PM Gillard needs to rein in her Carbon Price sales pitch as information being put out into the public sphere to combat the lies and scaremongering of the Opposition and their backers in the mining and dirty energy sector is in danger of becoming ‘counterproductive!’

What I actually said was that it was unwise to make political capital out of individuals being named by a terrorist. If you bother to look at the context of the posts I was responding to that is very clear.

I did not say that the broader issue of the right wing hate fest that is being undertaken by people in the US, here and elsewhere shouldn’t be discussed.

I posted several times on various blogs about Bolt’s articles on the attacks. I am not however going ro repeat every single post over and over again.

  28. Comments on here that the left (whatever it thinks itself to be) should not use the references to Pell and Howard as it would be somehow a bit shabby, highlights one of the most frustrating parts of the progressive thinking in Australia.
If Julia gillard or Bob Brown made the famous “shit happens’ comment they would have been in the chaff bag heading out to sea.
If the left can’t see that the Dog Whistle is the actual driver of Australian politics at the moment, well they need to get out of the coffee shops.
Lets put it this way,. If some crazed nutter onthe other side of the planet can see the message sent out in the smoke signals of Pell and Howard, do people not think that the same message is being sent to ‘Howards battlers’.
This is the whole modus operandi of the right, this is the technique they use,. Bolt, Jones and the other assembled advance guard run around appealing to the racism, sexism, anti muslim hysteria and fear of the battlers, they then role this up in aggressive anti ALP and in particular anti-Green, (oh and add homophopia) then tell their listeners.readers that this must stop and the way to do it is to vote for this lot over here who will solve these policies,. No mention that they want to roger you in the work place, they will rip you off in the Taxation department, (while the big end of town make a killing) don’t worry that on those issues where the majority are solidly progressive, ie euthanasia, bringing the troops back from the shamble of Iraq and Afghanistan, same sex marraige etc never gets a run in the media.
All this through a prism of a biased media. Abetz had the position that the media is fair as he thinks the ABC is to far left, but the Murdoch right balance it out. Well from the a Green perpective the ABC are a shambling incompetant apology for the right and the Murduch press and fellow travelors are nothing short of an inqusitorial possie.
This is where the ALP should stand up and have a go, they are so often falling for the ‘Oh we better suck’. No ther is one chance to expose the hegemonic bias of the media, if it is lost, the ALP will have no-one to blam but themselves.
The forces of darkness know that the best defence is attack, its about time the ALP learn’t this and took the innitiative on this.

  29. Here are some particular examples of why the Gillard Government is probably going to go down as one of the great reforming governments. It is from Bernard Keane in today’s Crikey and it is a quote lifted from a financial planning industry discussion forum:

"As a current planner within the named organisation, I know of a book of similar size that was full of ongoing service clients and when the planner was shown the door for not hitting their KPIs (surprise, surprise) the client base was simply moved to orphan territory. That was over 2 years ago and guess what, the base is still in orphan territory, while the named organisation continues collecting service fees and the vultures within continue to cherry pick, churn, and charge new up-front fees as they grab TTR strategies etc. And this is one of the largest wealth management businesses in the country. What a joke!"

Naturally, Mr Abbott, the Liberal Party and the National Party want no change. They are supporting a den populated disproportionately by thieves, spivs, cheats and frauds. This latter crew refers indulgently to the Mums and Dads as ‘woodies’: easy to pluck.

The issue of trailing commissions is one of the greatest scandals in the finance industry. It should simply be made illegal, IMHO.

Greens blocked from ‘public’ forum with TA on carbon tax

I listened to Tony Abbott try to justify the meeting this morning on local Mackay radio. It was hilarious, to the point where the ABC presenter quite sarcastically noted to TA that he still had a good sense of humour this early in the morning. His effort first stated it was open to all, then changed it to invite only when the presenter noted that invitations had been sent out. TA said yes, there were thousands of invites sent out by George Christensen (to my area specifically … didn’t get one!). So the presenter then asked him why they only had a 150 seat venue, noting that there were plenty of venues around with many more than 150 seats. TA said that George hadn’t expected TA to be so popular. Later TA said the presenter should go to a farm one day (he’s been to many) to see the effects the carbon tax will have …. I was waiting for the presenter to point out we were in a regional area where 30% of Australia’s sugar comes from……. she didn’t.

  33. It’s questionable whether Grattan is, as they say in the RSL Ode, by “the years condemned”. She incessantly spouted the same unthinking tripe against Hawke and Keating and even did her best to king-hit Hawke during the 1984 campaign debate when she was one of the journos on debate panel.

It has always been her go to indulge personal likes or dislikes of pollies based upon on the degree to which they would lick her boots. Grattan has never possessed sound reasoning skills or clarity in expression, just her permanent scowl and a penchant for venting of her spleen.

As with most our media “stars”, the REAL story is always how brilliant they are and how omniscient they’ve always been. If only Trioli, Milne, Uhlman, Bolt, Crabbe, Piers, or Clarke etc. would volunteer to run the country, just imagine the level of perfection we would achieve.

  45. It seems to me that the real issue is not really whether Mr Breivik liked someone. As Dio points out we cannot be held responsible for that.

The real issue appears to be whether he liked what Mr Howard, Mr Pell and Mr Windschuttle said and/or did, and whether what his contributed in some way to his behaviour. IMHO, this is a legitimate focus for enquiry.

For example, it would be irrelevant whether someone liked Mr Jones. But, if, having heard Mr Jones saying that he would like to put the Prime Minister in a chaff bag and throw her into the sea, someone actually does make an attempt on the life of the Prime Minister, then we would have a germane connection to consider.

Incidentally, there are two subliminal messages in Mr Jones’ selection of words. One I have previously mentioned. The first is that Ms Gillard would not fit into, say, a potato bag. She would fit into a chaff bag. In other words, Mr Jones appears to have given his assassination daydream some concrete thought. The second point is subliminal and comes from a world in which excess kittens are placed in a bag and thrown into the water to be drowned.

I mean to say, what else would a man reasonably do with a Prime Minister who is merely a disposable cat excess to Mr Jones democratic requirements?

  47. charlton,

As has been pointed out, it’s largely a cut-and-paste job.

If the mention of Pell is brief, then Breivik may not even be aware that it is there.

The Tampa connection seems to have alerted him to Australian affairs, but I’m not sure he would have come across Pell during that in a context he would have approved of.

  50. Objectives completed now by the ALP

    1. Delivered a budget
    2. Survived until July 1st 2011
    3. Announced details of the carbon tax
    4. Finalised the Malaysian Deal

    From here, they need to:

    1. Legislate the carbon tax
    2. Establish another 800 for 4000 (or similar) deal in the region
    3. Get the tax forum out of the way
    4. Survive until January 1st 2012
    5. Deliver 2012 Budget
    6. Survive until July 1st 2012 when the carbon tax package begins.

Everytime one of these objectives is achieved, the political landscape becomes more difficult for the Coalition
