Newspoll: 56-44 to Coalition
GhostWhoVotes tweets that the first post-carbon tax announcement Newspoll is one of the happier poll results for the government of the past fortnight: the Coalition’s two-party lead has eased to 56-44 from 58-42 a fortnight ago and support for the carbon tax is up six points to 36 per cent, with opposition down six to 53 per cent. On the primary vote, Labor is up two points to 29 per cent, the Coalition is down two to 47 per cent and the Greens are up one to 13 per cent. Julia Gillard has gained two points on approval to 32 per cent, but her disapproval remains stuck on 59 per cent. Tony Abbott is down three on approval to 39 per cent and up three on disapproval to 52 per cent, and has only just maintained his lead as preferred prime minister, dropping two points to 41 per cent with Gillard up two to 40 per cent.
We also had from the Herald-Sun yesterday a poll of 625 voters in Julia Gillard’s electorate of Lalor, conducted by JWS Research using its usual methodology of automated phone calls. The company has had a rather patchy record with its previous political polling, and the latest survey has been criticised for asking respondents attitudinal questions before proceeding to voting intention. It points to a 14 per cent swing against Gillard – solidly higher than the trend of recent national polling – although she still leads 58-42 on two-party preferred. Gillard has a four-point net positive approval rating among her own constituents, but the carbon tax is opposed by 43 per cent compared with 33 per cent in support. Fifty-seven per cent rate her “honest and trustworthy” (either quite or very), with 34 per cent opting for the negative.
UPDATE: Bernard Keane in Crikey reports the latest Essential Research result has the Coalition lead at 55-45, down from 56-44 last week and 57-43 the week before. Labor’s primary vote is up a point to 32 per cent, and the Coalition’s down one to 48 per cent. However, Tony Abbott’s policy of scrapping the carbon tax has the support of 50 per cent of respondents, with only 36 per cent opposed. There are also questions on trust in the media, which is found to have “slumped dramatically in recent months”. Trust in daily newspapers rates in the low 50s, television and radio news and current affairs in the high 40s and talk radio in the low 30s. With respect to specific outlets, the ABC and broadsheets are more trusted than the commercial media and tabloids. Fifty-eight per cent say the government should not allow one company to own the majority of Australia’s major newspapers – as News Limited does – which is up from 50 per cent since the question was last asked in November.
UPDATE 2: Full Essential Research report here.

You make some good points there. I know the other reporter you are referring to but can’t remember her name. She is useless.
If you ever watched the US Presidential debates in 2004, between Bush and Kerry, it was obvious that Bush was wearing something strapped around him which connected to an ear plug, and he received ongoing instructions on what to say etc.
You could even see the “bulge” in the middle of his back, of the prompter. Absolutely pathetic. It’s something that the LOTO here might take a look at. Nothing would surprise me. The MSM would not challenge him on it.

My say 2290.
There has been almost nothing in the local media regarding Abbotts visit, my guess is they have sent invitations to like minded people and kept the lead up low key to avoid protesters, very staged managed to create national coverage rather than local coverage ,very similar to how Rudd operated when leader. The end result is that it annoys the crap out of the local media causing all sorts of grief for the local candidate!
by why worry on Jul 26, 2011 at 3:31 pm
My say,
It was similar to the one the other day where the young Greens supporter was heckled and bustled out of the venue to be followed and harrassed by that Victorian Liberal goon.
It was only supposed to be open to LNP supporters. They didn’t want “any” people attending that might question Abbott’s anti CC propaganda which was only intended for the faithful.
Exactly the same thing is happening in Rockhampton tonight. Labor and greens supporters are “not” wanted.

In Mackay the invites were focussed on the Northern Beaches and Beaconsfield (one of the fastest growing parts of Mackay). TA is on the front page today (even though he’s in Rocky).

Who would be able to attend a political meeting in the middle of the day, other than retirees, the unemployed and the independantly wealthy? The carpark will be full of brand new landcruisers driven by climate change sceptics complaining that a cabon price will ruin them.

This is a powerful wake-up call to the effects of sexist abuse of females who come to political and social prominence. I, for one do not know how our first female PM, Julia Gillard puts up with it all.

my say, the problem in Mackay is that everyone is extremely busy, so events such as a TA visit don’t rate that highly. Very hard to get anyone at events in Mackay. (note … it’s not harvest time).
I get the feeling that people here in Mackay know that TA’s not being entirely truthful. It’s fairly obvious that the coal industry is growing rapidly and will for quite some time, so doomsday pronouncements don’t hold much weight. And for alternative fuels, there is a lot of scientific and backyard research here into alternatives such as ethanol, wind generation and other biofuels, so again, the Coalition’s words don’t quite ring true with what people see around them.
Having said that, there is a bit of a selfish air that has grown around the region with the influx of miners earning shirtloads of money, so they tend to lean towards the Coalition when they vote (albiet, the State Member is ALP), irrespective of the lies.

100% support for the Carbon Tax in Thornleigh, not far from where BB lives – at least in my household.
We’re more ambivalent about Julia’s leadership.

The normal Labor Tupperware partiers have been quick to accuse others of misogyny and inappropriate remarks of a gender and appearance-based variety in relation to Julia Gillard, but it turns quickly into Frank’s old favourite re kettles and pots when bludgers go on sexist rants about female journalists and politicians they dislike.
It is not an impressive display. Not impressive at all.
by Two Piece Feed on Jul 26, 2011 at 4:28 pm
From the NPC website ‘About Us’ tab:
Given that there is bipartisan political support in this country for reducing our GHGEs (AND by the same amount as well), what possible contribution does a “discussion” questioning the scientific reality of AGW by two men who don’t live in Australia, and aren’t even Australian citizens make to the “issue of the day” which is carbon pricing?
And furthermore, since when did the Czech President and an English aristocrat who falsely claims to be a member of the House of Lords become “personalities who help shape” the carbon pricing debate in this country?
I think the NPC had a brain snap with those two. Talk about missing the point completely.

All the dogs around here vote Labor, as to the lorikeets, butcher birds and kookaburras. Cockatoos are too silly to vote anything, leaving only the magpies who have swung solidly behind Tony Abbott.
Timmy, our dear departed puskalato, used to vote for the Australian Democats, while the brush turkeys are too busy eating (and driving the dogs crazy).
Possums sleep in and thus miss opening hours for polling booths, and the Eastern Rosellas are too shy.
Redneck Bogan next door votes Liberal as does his thick-headed girlfriend, but I can truly say that all my other neighbours lean heavily towards Labor. I think they got sick of me nagging them.
We’re so solidly Julia down this way that if a bomb was to go off in our street it would ensure Ruddock got just about all of the vote from Beecroft. Unattended cars are therefore checked regularly.
by Bushfire Bill on Jul 26, 2011 at 4:37 pm
Tony Abbott should be made to sit down and concentrate on his “Julia’s Shoe Leather” monologue from this morning and write an honest critique of it.
If the words childish, baseless, puerile, etc don’t feature he gets an F.

Sorry TPF, but sometime you’ve just gotta call it like it is.
I wonder why it is sexist to point out that most of the Murdoch news presentettes are blonde, while it is not sexist to implement that policy in the first place?

by BK on Jul 26, 2011 at 4:44 pm
Jackol @ 2297
The reason the ‘blonde’ reference is relevant in Gillon’s case is because of the penchant that SkyNews, and their ‘parent’ FoxNews both have for employing such stereotypical female reporters. Fox Sports are an even worse offender, and I believe that this is mere pandering to their predominently male audience.
The said Miss Gillon is indeed, a blonde, but more egregiously, she is incompetent as a political journalist (using that term advisedly in her case.) Unable, or unwilling to ask the difficult questions of her interview subjects, she appears never to listen to the response to any question, no matter how nonsensical, or off topic that response may be, and she seems to have no historical or even basic political or parliamentary knowledge, something that one would think would be a basic prerequisite for such a position in public affairs broadcasting.
Sadly, political knowledge or experience does not seem to be one of the criteria for selecting on air presenters at SkyNews, and a specific ‘look’ does seem to be predominant in their employment evaluations.
