Newspoll: 56-44 to Coalition

GhostWhoVotes tweets that the first post-carbon tax announcement Newspoll is one of the happier poll results for the government of the past fortnight: the Coalition’s two-party lead has eased to 56-44 from 58-42 a fortnight ago and support for the carbon tax is up six points to 36 per cent, with opposition down six to 53 per cent. On the primary vote, Labor is up two points to 29 per cent, the Coalition is down two to 47 per cent and the Greens are up one to 13 per cent. Julia Gillard has gained two points on approval to 32 per cent, but her disapproval remains stuck on 59 per cent. Tony Abbott is down three on approval to 39 per cent and up three on disapproval to 52 per cent, and has only just maintained his lead as preferred prime minister, dropping two points to 41 per cent with Gillard up two to 40 per cent.

We also had from the Herald-Sun yesterday a poll of 625 voters in Julia Gillard’s electorate of Lalor, conducted by JWS Research using its usual methodology of automated phone calls. The company has had a rather patchy record with its previous political polling, and the latest survey has been criticised for asking respondents attitudinal questions before proceeding to voting intention. It points to a 14 per cent swing against Gillard – solidly higher than the trend of recent national polling – although she still leads 58-42 on two-party preferred. Gillard has a four-point net positive approval rating among her own constituents, but the carbon tax is opposed by 43 per cent compared with 33 per cent in support. Fifty-seven per cent rate her “honest and trustworthy” (either quite or very), with 34 per cent opting for the negative.

UPDATE: Bernard Keane in Crikey reports the latest Essential Research result has the Coalition lead at 55-45, down from 56-44 last week and 57-43 the week before. Labor’s primary vote is up a point to 32 per cent, and the Coalition’s down one to 48 per cent. However, Tony Abbott’s policy of scrapping the carbon tax has the support of 50 per cent of respondents, with only 36 per cent opposed. There are also questions on trust in the media, which is found to have “slumped dramatically in recent months”. Trust in daily newspapers rates in the low 50s, television and radio news and current affairs in the high 40s and talk radio in the low 30s. With respect to specific outlets, the ABC and broadsheets are more trusted than the commercial media and tabloids. Fifty-eight per cent say the government should not allow one company to own the majority of Australia’s major newspapers – as News Limited does – which is up from 50 per cent since the question was last asked in November.

  1. The trenchant personal and insulting comments about her from shock jocks should not be tolerated. It really is unnecessary and unfair.

Feeney is it fair to describe Tony Abbott as a misogynist considering he has three daughters or that he’s a ‘mad monk’ or that he’s ‘Toxic Tony’ I mean really now???

If you’re against Gillard being attacked the way she is you should also be against the same such abuse Abbott gets.

  2. Dio, K

Actually an awful lot of people like Breivik used to be in the armed forces.

But then it was realised that they were needed much more urgently in management.

I wasn’t entirely being flippant. I have found several papers on the likelihood of finding sociopaths in management careers. It is difficult to get data but all argue it is likely to be above the population norm.

Having daughters doesn’t preclude being a misogynist.

People do not call into AM talk radio stations and advocate he should be assassinated. Shock jocks do not advocate he be put into a chaff bag and thrown into the sea. On the contrary, it is stations and shock jocks THAT SUPPORT HIM that broadcast these violent filthy hateful messages against Ms Gillard. Cut the moral equivalence.

  8. I have met some managers who are sociopaths.

But I have met far more non-managers who are sociopaths.

Of course, there are more non-managers than there are managers.

I don’t know whether sociopaths are over-represented in managerial ranks.

  10. Having daughters doesn’t preclude being a misogynist.

No but I’d like to see you ask his daughters or his wife whether he’s a misogynist before you label him one on here.

Cuppa those kind of comments are going to put more off the Liberals than on the band wagon IMHO.

Whilst I deplore such comments…politics is a dirty game. I wouldnt be surprised if many people in protests argue the same thing should happen to Howard.

Why do you all put so much credence on AM radio and shock jocks I mean honestly how many people listen to it and how many people who listen to it are already Tories? I think it’s a big exaggeration as to their ‘real power’.

My mate Kev needs your help!

I was in the Gong today and heard a bit of 2GBeejeezus

It was around 1pm, don’t know who the jock was but he was telling all their loyal listeners to vote for the Parrot in the Twinings tea competition because Kev is in front and they don’t want him to win

Said if the Parrot won the money would go to Fth Brennan’s youth off the streets and they sure could use the money, then said that they didn’t want Rudd getting it!
Like as though Kev would pocket the winnings
No mention that Kev’s charity is the RSPCA

On behalf of us moos and all the other animals ( both here on PB and elsewhere) I beg you
    Vote for Kev
    stuff the Parrot

    I thank you

  25. david @ 3429:

charleton the NZ National Govt requires the support of the Maori Party and ACT to have a majority in the House of Reps. The Greens usually vote with Labour and Peter Dunn a former Labour Minister has formed a party of his own The United Future party, of which he is the sole MP. There are a couple of Independents, former Labour MP and National MP.
Labour would require the same support as the Nats to be able to govern.
Is interesting to note since the formation of the Maori Party, Labour has lost what was formerly a given, the support of the majority of Maori in New Zealand.
The great former Labour PM’s Peter Fraser, Michael Joseph Savage, Walter Nash, Norman Kirk and David Lange would be turning in their graves at the state currently of NZ Labour

Thanks for your perceptions of NZ politics.

It’s obviously more complex than ours.

I considered David Lange as being very courageous when he denied US nuclear warships docking rights in New Zealand ports; but wasn’t aware he’d died.

    I also recall Norman Kirk.

As posted earlier, I think John Key is very impressive.

  42. Latest news:

Tony Windsor has challenged Tony Abbott to a debate on the carbon scheme in the seat of New England.

Apparently Abbott would only accepted the debate if it was against Julia and, mind you, with a stacked audience (by invitation).

Tony Windsor refused saying he wanted to debate Abbott in his own seat with a free and open audience.

Abbott was too chicken to accept, his little tiny marbles let him down again LOL, he’s a wimp!

Re Norm Kirk. You may want to watch this interview of him after thee Ottowa Commonwealth meeting when he got an anti nuclear testing resolition uo. The actual interview starts at 2:20. What struck me about this clip from nearly 40 years ago was how it sounded like and adult conversation rather than point scoring undergrad debating society crud.
