Essential Research: 54-46 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll has Labor recovering the point they lost last week, with the Coalition lead on two-party preferred down from 55-45 to 54-46. However, the primary vote figures suggest there is little in the change: the major parties are steady on 34 per cent for Labor and 48 per cent for the Coalition (although a one-point drop for the Liberals disappears from the Coalition total after rounding), with the Greens up a point to 11 per cent. Other questions find mounting opposition to the contention that the budget should return to surplus at all costs. Seventy-one per cent declared themselves opposed if doing so meant “cutting services and raising taxes”, with only 13 per cent supportive. Fifty-eight per cent said there was no need for the budget to return to surplus so quickly compared with 38 per cent in April, but if the government remains determined, the number who believe it should be paid for by removing tax breaks for high income earners (59 per cent) and increasing taxes for corporations (72 per cent) is up eight and nine points respectively. Only 35 per cent nominated cuts to “middle-class welfare”.

Further evidence of voters’ curiously social democratic bent was furnished by a question in which respondents were asked to indicated whether various parties had benefited from the mining boom: 68 per cent said yes for mining company executives, 48 per cent for shareholders and 42 per cent for foreign companies, against 12 per cent for regional communities and 11 per cent for “all Australians”. There was also an interesting question on the leaders’ performances during Barack Obama’s visit, in light of suggestions that Julia Gillard had been too effusive and Tony Abbott had politicised the occasion. The results suggest much more support for the latter contention than the former: Gillard’s performance was rated good by 38 per cent and poor by 23 per cent, compared with 18 per cent and 30 per cent for Abbott.

If you look at the numbers, ALP membership was pretty steady from 2002 to 2007. It was then that it started dropping.

That wouldn’t fit with a surge in 2007 due to WorkChoices and a compensatory drop since then. My guess is hatred of Howie-Libs was keeping the numbers up and then the job was done so there was a let-down.

It might be the opposite of footy club membership; you have more members when you are doing badly. ;)

  7. On the eve of Labor’s National Conference, now is a good time to revisit a speech by John Faulkner made in June 2011:

And no structural reform will have effect without a commitment to cultural and attitudinal reform within the Party. Many of the ALP’s structures and rules create barriers to participation, but even if we had the most open of organisational structures we would also need the commitment and desire to use them properly. Participation in the Party must be made meaningful once more. Members and supporters must be heard as well as permitted to speak. Party officials must stop regarding conviction as weakness and values as inconvenient.

You can believe Sky News and The Australian’s distortion of a single Graph. You can ignore what is written in the review, I tend to like facts not New Ideas.

Reading numbers from the ALP’s own graph is hardly distorting the facts.

The numbers are what the numbers are.

    That is reality.

  16. According to the Review, the loss of members is not across the board with the larger states being the main problem, esp NSW, although they don’t provide a breakdown.

Structurally though, the Party is in decline. Membership has continued to fall, and while it has stabilised in some states, it has done so because it has reached ‘ground water’. In some of the larger states the Party continues to haemorrhage members. In NSW alone, more than 100 branches have closed in the last ten years. The Labor Party now faces a crisis in membership.

At meetings I’ve been to, and he has been present, no view has been expressed by him.

My suspicion would be that, being the religious conservative that he is, he would be opposed to same-sex marriage. Full stop.

I notice that he has been mute on this subject.

I just hope that the PM can, again, give strong leadership in this area.

Why should the PM be held responsible for the failure of a conscience vote in Parliament and not the coalition for not allowing its reps a free choice ? Besides, why is it assumed that caucus voting as a block would ensure success ?

Well, according to JV that’s where the blame lies. You see, she’s a lackey of Farrell and the DLP/shoppies and they’ll be controlling the conscience-vote by intimidation. A conscience vote in a right-controlled party will guarantee defeat (according to JV) because they’ll take down the names of those who dare to vote according to their conscience, and most are not the brave.

As one old enough to remember the conscience vote in the House on abortion back in the 70s, I’m not all that convinced of the JV thesis.

All grown up: ministers talking policy, not politics
    By ABC's Barrie Cassidy
    Posted December 01, 2011 15:27:19

Just lately, and not before time, most federal government ministers are talking on subjects they know something about. They are actually restricting their comments to the responsibilities they hold within their portfolios.

Wayne Swan and Penny Wong have used the mid-year review to talk about the economy; Tony Burke has been explaining the Murray Darling Basin draft plan; recently Kevin Rudd and Craig Emerson used global forums to talk about foreign policy and trade; and Bill Shorten spoke eloquently about industrial relations during the Qantas dispute. (Well, there is always one exception.)

The point is, when ministers are talking policies and not politics, that's a sure sign the Government is setting the agenda and the Opposition is struggling for relevance.

Until now the Greens have been considered irrelevant, or so I have been led to believe by so many here on PB, for a couple of years at least ;-)

Consequently, the MSM too were never really interested in reporting the Greens annual conferences, or reporting any in-depth analysis of Greens policies, etc.

Apparently, the Greens have become relevant now ;-)
