Newspoll: 54-46 to Coalition

GhostWhoVotes tweets that the latest Newspoll has the Coalition two-party lead at 54-46, down from an aberrant 57-43 a fortnight ago. The Coalition is down four points on the primary vote to 44 per cent, which in fact returns them to where they were in the poll before last. Labor is up a point to 31 per cent, which is still a point shy of the previous poll, and the Greens are on 13 per cent, which compares with 10 per cent last time and 12 per cent the time before. Julia Gillard has consolidated the lead she opened up as preferred prime minister a fortnight ago, which ended five months of ascendancy for Tony Abbott: she is now up three to 43 per cent, with Abbott up one to 36 per cent. Gillard also has a less bad net approval rating than Abbott for the first time in eight months, with her approval up two points to 36 per cent (its highest in eight months) and disapproval up one to 56 per cent. Abbott is down one on approval to 33 per cent and up two on disapproval to 57 per cent, in both cases equalling his previous worst results and collectively producing his lowest ever net rating of minus 24.

UPDATE: Essential Research likewise has it at 54-46, unchanged from last week, with primary votes of 47 per cent for the Coalition (down one), 34 per cent for Labor (steady) and 10 per cent for the Greens (down one). Encouragingly for Labor, there has been a shift in sentiment in favour of the government seeing out its full term: support is up seven points since early September to 47 per cent, with “hold election now” down seven to 41 per cent. Less happily for them, a question on best party to handle 15 issues has Labor leading only on industrial relations, and then only slightly – the Liberals hold leads approaching 20 per cent for all economic questions, as well as “political leadership”. On the question of which issues will most influence vote choice, there has been little change since June.

UPDATE 2: Possum charts polling showing a shift in sentiment away from an early election:

However, the apparently radical nature of the shift from the first two polls to the last three is largely a function of the poorly framed question posed by Galaxy in the earlier cases, when respondents were offered the false dichotomy of “Gillard has a mandate for the carbon tax” and “an early election should be called”. Australia’s worst and least trusted major newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, used these obviously flawed results to run a front page lead claiming Australians were “demanding Julia Gillard call a fresh election” and an editorial headlined “voters demand a carbon tax ballot”. It will be interesting to see how the paper reports today’s contrary finding from Essential Research.

  4. From the Wikipedia article on Father Chris Riley:

A significant amount of charitable donations to Father Riley's Youth Off The Streets (including work undertaken in Indonesia and ethiopia) come from the Australian Gambling Industry, particularly poker machines.

Father Riley has lobbied against the taxation of gambling, stating that "the Government won't fund services like mine and are now also attacking the revenues that we previously did have available."

With respect to the his position on the effect of gambling on society, he states "I acknowledge that the great problem facing the community is people who are addicted to gambling and I call for the clubs to put in place systems and supports to help people fight this addiction.

Father Riley seems to need the Clubs to provide the raw materials for his foundation.

Without pokie addicts and the profits they generate so that the Clubs can send a few miserable dollars his way, Father Riley would be up in the islands, swatting mozzies and teaching the nates in Pidgin how to add 2+2. No Wiki article. No gig on 2UE.

Indeed, 4.25% is the lowest the Howard government ever achieved, in January 2002, for three months, until they went up again, and never stopped after that.

One more drop to 3.75%, and rates will equal their lowest under this government, and be lower than for any time for decades.

Two of the biggest financial disasters that the UK government had to rescue were Royal Bank of Scotland and Bank of Scotland (and Northern Rock was probably infected from across the Cheviots)

Poker machines are undoubtedly a scourge and can devastate a family to a much greater extent than a theft.

Not sure about all the other states, but Victoria has a ‘self exclusion’ arrangement. The problem is that it is carefully designed to be totally ineffective.

The self exclusion applies venue by venue, so having excluded from all nearby venues, the problem gambler will then travel a little further. Who would have thought! Also, it relies on venue staff remembering all the self excluded punters and recognising them. Futile I would have thought.

An effective self exclusion scheme could be of some benefit if a single application for self exclusion then applied to all venues in the jurisdiction or, better still, nation wide. But how to enforce it? Just as other entertainment venues, such as nightclubs, control entry, so too should gambling dens, requiring photo ID which can be checked against a database. Or a stronger mechanism if one can be devised. Technology should be able to offer a better solution.

Since family members and others can go to a court and seek an intervention order if they feel threatened by a family member, there should be legislation enabling family members to go to court to seek an order excluding a family member from gambling dens to protect the family from financial injury.

I suggest the above as modest FIRST STEPS in dealing with this parasitic scourge.

  23. Morning all. Disappointing to see no major bank has yet passed on the rates cut. Govt should hammer that point.

Also interested to see BB’s 2103 regarding gambling revenue and Father Riley’s ministry income. Sadly I’m not surprised. It is but one of many bad examples of charities taking money from very dubious sources I have seen.

The Democrats pressed for tighter definitions of charity, and stripping away tax exemptions for religeous purposes years ago, and they were right. Back when I was involved in the Catholic Church i saw some very dubious allocations of legitimately donated funds (i.e. not used for the purpose they were donated for). This is a rock that badly needs turning over.

  46. Good morning, Bludgers.

Happy anniversary to you and your husband , my say.

So cold and wet here I had to switch on the electric blanket to stop aging joints keeping me awake. Apparently we will have 2 fine days this month (inc Christmas Day). Clothes driers will cop another hiding.

These are the summers typical of Brisbane (and Q & N-NSW) 1946/7-76; the SuperWet decades.

So the OO is frothing at the mouth. Again.

The founder’s empire runs on the Either I ‘own’ the PM and government, or I destroy it principle. He failed to win PM Gillard, so his NewsLtd did the best to destroy her Government and install Abbott, the alternative PM he could own – and take over Australia Network – asap. But she and her government were too resilient for the OO, NewsLtd, Rupert Murdoch himself.

Meanwhile, the ugly criminal tabloid culture he created in the UK came crashing down this year under the PM he thought he owned more completely than he did Blair; yet such was the depravity and criminality at the heart of NewsInt’l, Dave Cameron’s Minister refused to hand over more of BSkyB.

The world watched – still watches – the unfolding story of thuggery, corruption, destruction of people’s lives, even suicide, resulting from illegal hacking, blagging, intrusion into people’s lives; the devastation caused by what NewsInt’l writers knew to be completely false slanders; the utter disdain and disregard for British law at the core of billionaire Murdoch’s megalomaniacal greed and obsession for power over everyone, especially governments and those whose lives could be ruined for more billions.

No government should ever do deals with such a company. No government should, given the extent of criminal activities (inc corruption of a police force from the highest ranks to those ‘on the beat’) at the core of a media company, allow it more control of national media than it already has. The UK government has learnt and applied that lesson.

It seems the Australian PM and Government, which NewsLtd doesn’t own, has also.

    Suck it up, NewsLtd.
