Newspoll: 55-45 to Coalition
GhostWhoVotes tweets that the latest fortnightly Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party preferred lead at 55-45, from primary votes of 32 per cent for Labor (up two on last time) and 46 per cent for the Coalition (up one). The personal ratings are good news for Tony Abbott: his approval rating is up four to 36 per cent and his disapproval is down three to 52 per cent, and he has opened up a lead over Julia Gillard as preferred prime minister of 40 per cent (up three) to 37 per cent (down three). Julia Gillard is respectively up down one to 32 per cent and up two to 57 per cent. Newspoll also ran a teaser last night showing Abbott favoured over Gillard for economic management 43 per cent to 34 per cent, and Wayne Swan and Joe Hockey in a statistical dead heat for preferred Treasurer (38 per cent to 37 per cent).
We also today had yet another 54-46 result from Essential Research. After losing a point on the primary vote over each of the two previous weeks, Labor was back up one to 34 per cent, with the Greens down one to 10 per cent and the Coalition steady on 47 per cent. Essential’s monthly measure of leadership approval found both leaders’ personal ratings essentially unchanged – Julia Gillard down one on approval to 36 per cent and up one on disapproval to 53 per cent, Tony Abbott steady on 35 per cent and up two to 53 per cent – but contrary to Newspoll, Gillard made a solid gain as preferred prime minister, her lead up from 39-36 to 41-34. However, only 31 per cent expected her to lead Labor to the next election against 47 per cent who said they didn’t (hats off to the 22 per cent who admitted they didn’t know); while for Tony Abbott the numbers were 47 per cent and 25 per cent.
A question on government control of media ownership has support for more control and less control tied on 24 per cent, with 34 per cent thinking it about right. There was also a question on the impact of Gina Rinehart on the independence of Fairfax newspapers, which I personally find a little odd – the issue would mean little outside of New South Wales and Victoria. I also had my doubts about the question on whether Australia is “fair and just”, but the question asking for comparison with other countries is interesting: Canada and New Zealand are seen as Australia’s main partners in freedom, the UK does less well, Japan and France less well again, and the United States worse still. China however sits well below the rest of the field.

Davidwh,
I doubt Labor in Qld could initiate an FBI inquiry. Cando is the one doing the smearing from my POV with his tawdry accusations against Fraser today.
Can guarantee this will bite him on the bum big time.

Too late for Newman. The stench is in his clothing, in his hair and his gumboots are filled with the smelly stuff. If Labor does lose the state election it will be some consolation to see Newman without a seat.
by Tom Hawkins on Feb 15, 2012 at 5:21 pm
Tom I have no problem with politicians coming under scrunity and if Newman has genuine issues to confront then he should be held to account.

al palster – sounds the only way to go. A friend in Adelaide met Julia a few months ago and she said she is so natural off telly and the group there absolutely loved her. Much talk when she left about why she got so much bad publicity.
So you’ve got the right idea. Speak directly to everyone, everywhere as often as possible and forget the press even exists.

Apparently, Dutton has managed to display all the class of a slug today.
Unfortunately Tony Burke lost his mother yesterday. Rudd spoke to him briefly in Parliament to offer his condolences and Dutton started shouting they were have a Leadership meeting across the Chamber.
I suppose you would not expect any better.

Well, you’re a doctor, so you’d know. Maybe she’s trying to have one?
Seriously (or not) don’t you wish you could go on one of these shows and bang their stupid, obsessed, petty skulls together and tell them the public’s interested in government and policy, what it means to them, and whether it will work… and not this pissweak, oxygen-sucking leadership shit?
They got it wrong with Costello-Howard 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. They got it wrong with Abbott-Hockey 2009. They got it wrong with Gillard-Rudd 2010. And they’re getting it wrong with Rudd-Gillard 2012. They are chronically and continuously wrong, all the time, yet they persist.
They listen to self-serving rumours and let their biases and their willingness to crawl to their bosses – or to people who might be their boss someday – amplify gossip into hard facts.
Once it is in the newspapers they can then say, “It’s in the papers, so it must be worth discussing.” They all take this attitude. So they play the game of You-Discuss-My-Article-And-I’ll-discuss-Yours. It’s a travesty of journalism and a shame on the profession.
The only “fact” is that a few malcontents have rung them up, making them feel important. They admit, when pressed, that there’s nothing to it, but that’s not a story. So they invent scenarios like “Rudd will do Gillard slowly”, or “Rudd will wait until after the Budget” when the truth of the matter is he doesn’t have the numbers and most likely never will. Rudd didn’t lose in the Caucus 121-0 because he was popular.
I repeat: these people have not correctly picked a leadership challenge since Rudd took over from Beazley in 2006, and that was such a lay-down misere Bob, my dog, could have picked it.
The amount of air time and column inches they take up with this endless speculation is maddening. They are making fools of themselves. Yet they keep on doing it.
Sometimes I think the more their readers mock them, the more determined they are to pull it off this time.
Truly awful. I am fed up.

Lyne Lady,
It was a bit of a cheap shot from me about Grattan – almost identical in looks only. Disagree with you about Grattans integrity – she has it, in spades. Always has. It’s just that she’s lost her once insightful judgement. She’s half the Michelle she used to be.

Dutton said the leadership spill was on because not just KRudd, but a lot of ministers had been chatting to Burke.

Something about Ol’ Coke Bottles having orgasms. Must admit it IS a pretty horrible thought.
Perhaps I should have said political orgasms.
Whatever, she’s relishing this. It’s written all over her face. She is the Bitch In Chief against Gillard, without the slightest doubt. She hasn’t got anything right for years, or hardly even written a readable column. Yet she clearly sees herself as a player. So she wants to go out with a bang.
Sorry, a political bang.

I am referring in particular to his comment at #2265, and to a lesser extent to his ongoing use of “Old Coke Bottles”. It’s depressing how many people here are keen to cheer along with this sort of sleaze. The only difference between many here and the Andrew Bolt and Convoy of No Confidence crowd is the set of dogmas you’ve chosen to latch on to.
