Newspoll: 55-45 to Coalition
GhostWhoVotes tweets that the latest fortnightly Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party preferred lead at 55-45, from primary votes of 32 per cent for Labor (up two on last time) and 46 per cent for the Coalition (up one). The personal ratings are good news for Tony Abbott: his approval rating is up four to 36 per cent and his disapproval is down three to 52 per cent, and he has opened up a lead over Julia Gillard as preferred prime minister of 40 per cent (up three) to 37 per cent (down three). Julia Gillard is respectively up down one to 32 per cent and up two to 57 per cent. Newspoll also ran a teaser last night showing Abbott favoured over Gillard for economic management 43 per cent to 34 per cent, and Wayne Swan and Joe Hockey in a statistical dead heat for preferred Treasurer (38 per cent to 37 per cent).
We also today had yet another 54-46 result from Essential Research. After losing a point on the primary vote over each of the two previous weeks, Labor was back up one to 34 per cent, with the Greens down one to 10 per cent and the Coalition steady on 47 per cent. Essential’s monthly measure of leadership approval found both leaders’ personal ratings essentially unchanged – Julia Gillard down one on approval to 36 per cent and up one on disapproval to 53 per cent, Tony Abbott steady on 35 per cent and up two to 53 per cent – but contrary to Newspoll, Gillard made a solid gain as preferred prime minister, her lead up from 39-36 to 41-34. However, only 31 per cent expected her to lead Labor to the next election against 47 per cent who said they didn’t (hats off to the 22 per cent who admitted they didn’t know); while for Tony Abbott the numbers were 47 per cent and 25 per cent.
A question on government control of media ownership has support for more control and less control tied on 24 per cent, with 34 per cent thinking it about right. There was also a question on the impact of Gina Rinehart on the independence of Fairfax newspapers, which I personally find a little odd – the issue would mean little outside of New South Wales and Victoria. I also had my doubts about the question on whether Australia is “fair and just”, but the question asking for comparison with other countries is interesting: Canada and New Zealand are seen as Australia’s main partners in freedom, the UK does less well, Japan and France less well again, and the United States worse still. China however sits well below the rest of the field.

my say
I just saw that this morning you asked me how long it takes to get to Adelaide.
It reliably takes 34 mins to the bottom of the freeway or to the top of Northeast road. At night time it’s another 12 from the freeway. Otherwise it’s traffic dependent.

So they have dropped another 150,000 viewers. If memory serves me correct the last figures we had from David were around the 750,000 mark.
Wonder how long it will take for Uhlmann to get those numbers down another few hundred thousand.

Read the annual report:
http://www.sbs.com.au/aboutus/corporate/view/id/111/h/Annual-Reports
2/3 of SBS income still comes straight from the federal government. Over $211 million last year. They then made $100 million on services. Which I guess is mainly adverts and selling DVDs.
Oh, and doing subtitles.
I agree with you that SBS and ABC should be merged.

I never liked that part of it. It’s the same as financially penalising a wealthy couple who sends their kid to a public school.

FWA asked 5 people to comment on possible adverse findings, Thomson was not one of the five.

Actually, i now hate you HSO!!
Do investigate. Its widely known that Telstra is going in big time with the marketing as the NBN gets to sign up stage in an area to try and lock people into contracts. Have been seeing lots of stuff about ISP’s price lists coming out and there are some good deals around that have VOIP services for phone included.
Remember, i hate you.

Not that this means anything, but Richo was saying at the height of the frenzy of Thomson, that it was silly of the govt to preselect him because of his involvement in the HSU

Dee,
No wonder morale in the unit is low. At this rate of audience decline there would be justification for axing the show before the end of the year.

Yeah they still have that nonsense. Which is hilarious, it just makes private health insurance more expensive for young people, and makes them less likely to take it out as they get older.

by This little black duck on Feb 15, 2012 at 8:29 pm
Yep if you are 70, hit a bad patch and drop insurance for a year or so, you pay triple to get it back, this is why pensioners are sticking with PHI.

If you are into recycling take a trip over to Planet Pies and his blog. Last week he revealed that the government will soon fall because “The Heiner Affair” will explode……..yet again. Causing Rudd to go ,by election lost, Labor out. “The Heiener Affair” being recycled for when KR was a Labor leader prospect, when he was leader, when he was likely PM and when he was PM.

I can’t tell you how much better it feels for giving the ABC away. It’s not an easy adjustment to make, of course, but very liberating once done.

Diog,
The only Thomson investigation is the one which George Brandis SC referred to the NSW police which they, in turn, referred to the Vic police.
My bit of blue belly-fluff is worth more investigating.
by This little black duck on Feb 15, 2012 at 8:33 pm
There’s only 1 investigation.
by ShowsOn on Feb 15, 2012 at 8:33 pm
Nope. They are doing one investigation, they have found 25 breaches against the Vic HSU and possible (not quantified) breaches against the Fed HSU.
The only confirmed breaches involve Kathy Jackson.

But then the shite arrives:
Ah well. Twas good for a while.
by kezza2 on Feb 15, 2012 at 8:34 pm
How good was QT today. It was fantastic.
The highlight for me was the look on Swannie and Albos faces as the Fibs got the boot (sorry the Slipper). Then when the Poodle got shown the door, B Bishop staggered towards the box.
As she was approaching amongst the laughter Albo pipes up and said “Oh no Brommie is the Boss now”
And what about Slipper playing J Bishop like a cat with a mouse. She was up and down like a ten pin.
If you have not seen it – make a point of watching the replay. The smirk on Slippers face as he dealt with Julie.
They were not happy campers.

by Dee on Feb 15, 2012 at 8:39 pm
According to this, there are two concurrent FWA investigations, one into the Vic HSU and the other into the national HSU.
The 25 breaches one they talked about today is the Vic one.
The one seeking responses by March 5 is the national one. This says Thomson’s lawyers are responding to that one.

Bludgers I am an anarchist and rarely find myself sympathising with authority figures, but the way William gets treated around here really is something else. The man is so tolerant and indulgent of you all – you should be down on your knees thanking him!
Yes, occasionally he calls various of you out for being the stupid, infantile, imbeciles you very often are, but he does it much less frequently than he could. Especially after what you have all done to his blog!
William is a serious person running a serious website for the analysis of political opinion polling and electoral trends. And you have all hijacked his blog and turned it into an ALP supporters love-in, complete with groupthink delusions, conspiracy theories and routine abuse of those you see as your enemies, both on the blog and outside of it.
It must be embarrassing to him. Genuinely intelligent people of substance rarely comment here any more, and if they do it is on the state polling threads, where all of you imbeciles rarely venture. You have absolutely destroyed any prospect of serious discussion of federal opinion polls and politics.
It is not just the disgusting abuse that gets dished out – vile slurs against Michelle Grattan being but one example – it is the way you all stick up for the abusers and turn on William. You have all been mired in the cesspool you have turned Poll Bludger into for so long that you have lost your moral compasses.
What you have done to William’s blog has turned it into a place that I now only view for entertainment purposes. Many people probably do not view at all – at least not the comments sections.
You should all take a good look in the mirror Bludgers. Take a look in the mirror and weep.
