Newspoll: 55-45 to Coalition

GhostWhoVotes tweets that the latest fortnightly Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party preferred lead at 55-45, from primary votes of 32 per cent for Labor (up two on last time) and 46 per cent for the Coalition (up one). The personal ratings are good news for Tony Abbott: his approval rating is up four to 36 per cent and his disapproval is down three to 52 per cent, and he has opened up a lead over Julia Gillard as preferred prime minister of 40 per cent (up three) to 37 per cent (down three). Julia Gillard is respectively up down one to 32 per cent and up two to 57 per cent. Newspoll also ran a teaser last night showing Abbott favoured over Gillard for economic management 43 per cent to 34 per cent, and Wayne Swan and Joe Hockey in a statistical dead heat for preferred Treasurer (38 per cent to 37 per cent).

We also today had yet another 54-46 result from Essential Research. After losing a point on the primary vote over each of the two previous weeks, Labor was back up one to 34 per cent, with the Greens down one to 10 per cent and the Coalition steady on 47 per cent. Essential’s monthly measure of leadership approval found both leaders’ personal ratings essentially unchanged – Julia Gillard down one on approval to 36 per cent and up one on disapproval to 53 per cent, Tony Abbott steady on 35 per cent and up two to 53 per cent – but contrary to Newspoll, Gillard made a solid gain as preferred prime minister, her lead up from 39-36 to 41-34. However, only 31 per cent expected her to lead Labor to the next election against 47 per cent who said they didn’t (hats off to the 22 per cent who admitted they didn’t know); while for Tony Abbott the numbers were 47 per cent and 25 per cent.

A question on government control of media ownership has support for more control and less control tied on 24 per cent, with 34 per cent thinking it about right. There was also a question on the impact of Gina Rinehart on the independence of Fairfax newspapers, which I personally find a little odd – the issue would mean little outside of New South Wales and Victoria. I also had my doubts about the question on whether Australia is “fair and just”, but the question asking for comparison with other countries is interesting: Canada and New Zealand are seen as Australia’s main partners in freedom, the UK does less well, Japan and France less well again, and the United States worse still. China however sits well below the rest of the field.

  4. The $10,000 red carpet refugee story is a classic. It’s not good enough to simply have a crack at Abbott for repeating the story – the source (DT) should be slapped down as well.

    Absolutely.

The other gutter classic that got a mention in Parliament a week or so ago was that scandalous suggestion (I think from our old friend 2GB) that Oakeshott had been, effectively, bribed by the Federal Government with a roads grant, being moneys diverted from being spent on the Pacific Highway in another electorate, and that this had led to the death of a kid in a crash on the stretch of road that had missed-out on improvement.

    This was truly awful stuff.

And completely untrue, as it turns out.

This is the sort of press we seem to have here now.

by fredn on Feb 18, 2012 at 5:31 pm

  13. DTT: the thing that everyone seems to be forgetting is that, in any leadership vote, the Left always supports the incumbent.

It is the Right that needs to bring on a spill, and all the main players in the Right are still backing Gillard. In fact, some more vociferously now than they were in 2010.

Rudd and his “supporters” can dream all they like.

    It ain’t happening.

by Danny Lewis on Feb 18, 2012 at 5:32 pm

  14. Mod lib @6077,

    Thanks for that.

Who in the ALP is talking to the MSM ? Every article goes on about “it is reported Nicola Roxon and other Ministers are doing this or that ” or “it is reported that Gillard supporters are doing this or that ”

If anyone from the ALP is talking to the MSM it would appear to be Rudd and or his group as appears to have been the case for a while without this much force all at once.

So I think the questions still remain relevant.

Why this weekend and why so hard ?

    cheers.

But they could remind them that when the newspaper industry here finally turns its toes up they’ll all qualify for a generous unemployment benefit and, rest assured, their skills will not be lost as they will be placed in some nice work for the dole scheme writing press releases for the Refugee Council or Friends of the Earth (or some other worthy not-for-profit outfit).

This morning’s Oz lists all the members and their leanings. Rudd appears to have 36 definite votes and a further nine leaning to him. In addition there are about 6 current Ministers who will always support the current PM but may well shift if there is a spill

Now without being a journo the lists seem OK or at least to the limited extent of my information are consistent with people I am sure about and make sense in terms of factional/state/marginal seat status.

So like it or not it seems as if Rudd is getting close to the numbers. If the 6 Ministers DID shift as a block then Rudd is just one short of a majority.

Ahhh, FFS DTT post a link so we can examine your evidence.

“The lists seem OK or at least to the limited extent of my information. . .”
WTF is that supposed to mean?

    Show us your “limited extent”

Or did I waste a whole post pointing out how unreliable your “evidence” is?

  42. Blackburnpseph…6068 re Victoria
    _________
In Victoria in the mid-50iesSplit in the ALP,,,a key factor in terms of personal conflict was the determination of the Leader of The Movement,Santamaria.. to enforce his views of the dangers of a communist takeover…never a possibility on Oz ..on his devout supporters. who . real worshipped his supposed leadership and brilliance.
Once at a weekend seminar he adressed his supports for hours on end…like Casto or Mao

He was able to dominate the ageing Archbiship Mannix
Read Ross Fitzgerald’s book “The Pope’s Battalions ” for a picture of Santamaria and Mannix
Maninix’s successor Arch. Simmons was a fierce critic of Santamaria and the way he had used the church to his advantage and literally drove his supporters out of the centres of Catholic power in Melbourne…with says of the old man’s death in 1963..and kept Santamaria at bay in the years ahead
So personal matters are often most important

So your support for the ALP is on your terms only.

What is the alternative? “My party, always right”? Or, equally unsustainably, “My party, right or wrong”?

my say has the right to vote in whichever way her conscience sways her, and still be loyal to the ideals of the ALP. Registering a protest vote because of a strong disagreement with the actions of a political party has long been a legitimate part of the democratic process.
