Essential Research: 55-45 to Coalition

Despite having mostly come too early for the weekend’s excitement, the weekly Essential Research poll has moved away a point from the 54-46 stasis in which it had been locked since December 12, with the Coalition lead now at 55-45. Since Essential is a two-week rolling average, so that only half the poll was conducted over the previous week, this shift is more likely to be meaningful than it would from another pollster, although it’s probably still within the margin of error. Labor is down a point on the primary vote to 33 per cent with the Coalition up one to 48 per cent and the Greens up one to 11 per cent.

Despite the voting intention figures, a series of questions on substantive points of policy shows support for the government’s positions: 53 per cent support means testing the private health insurance rebate against 33 per cent opposed; 56 per cent support the National Broadband Network against 25 per cent opposed, respectively up two and down three since the question was last posed last April; and support for the mining tax is up four points since November to 55 per cent with opposition down five to 28 per cent.

Well we may have thought those days were behind us, but now they seem a genuine future possibility. Just imagine if the next Newspoll is 57/43 – all hell will break loose again, and create an even more negative view of Gillard Labor.

Gillard is now living from poll to poll.

  9. Will be intrigued to see what interesting fiction our esteemed 4th estate aka ‘the extrapolators’ come up with tomorrow!

I reckon it will be something to do with black holes.

Ever since they put a few wild predictions into the linear accelerator, spun them around a few million tomes before smashing them into each other and created the Ruddlet (a sort of political strangelet), the only thing left to do is to argue that it will begin sucking-in everything around it, until it eventually reaches black hole proportions.

At that point it will gobble-up the Government, then Canberra, before sinking to the centre of the planet and devouring the Earth from within.

It’ll the end of political life as we know it.

The upside is that Abbott will be sucked in too and will never make PM.

by smithe on Feb 21, 2012 at 10:58 pm

  10. I see Gonski seems to have sunk like a stone.

To a certain extent the government may be happy to fly under the radar with this – give them the chance to have quiet chats with the states and the schools and the unions etc.

Compare and contrast with the RSPT.

Given the positive response from the experts, I think the government will be quite happy so far, and will keep it bubbling along for now.

Provided the government doesn’t get consumed by leadershit, bringing legislation to parliament later in the year (as Peter Garrett has implied), and then taking a policy to the 2013 election to follow through to implement Gonski would seem like a good timeline/goal.

For my money, I always make sure I read bemused’s posts. Incisive and thought provoking, always good value, whether you agree or not. Doesn’t give a flying flip what anyone thinks, tells it like he sees it, and I value that.

Your cheque is in the mail don.

More seriously, I also appreciate good posts by others regardless of whether I agree. I always learn from them.

GG is a sad case, someone who seems to me to be deeply unhappy.

  23. Thomas Paine: It obviously doesn’t matter to a good section of the Labor caucus how bad the polls are, because they’re doggedly sticking to Julia, come hell or high water.
Then again, if the much touted carbon tax compensation doesn’t turn things around for her in a hurry, the leadership thing will be reopened, if not by Rudd, then by Crean or Shorten.
And, I doubt very much that she’s got any grounds for sacking Rudd from the Foreign Affairs portfolio – it’d just make things worse if she did so.

Yeah, why not? Gives him greater freedom and more time to get out and about campaigning in Queensland and elsewhere.

And of course he can rely on Gillard to continue her relentless campaign against ther won leadership. Wonder what the next stumble will be?

  28. Saw an ABC promo for Ms A. Crabbe’s cooking show featuring C. Pyne, P. Wong, A. Vanstone.

Couldn’t help but speculate on the menus.

    C. Pyne: Bile sandwich. White bread, liberal dose of GM canola. Pickled onions, a gherkin.

    P. Wong: A mild, comfy curry. An interesting, complex dish.

    A. Vanstone: Jellied pigs’ trotters, in shortcrust pastry. White Crow tomato sauce. Pickled onions, two gherkins.

This is just the first draft of the menus: they need fine tuning, obviously. But, hey, it’s a start!

Needless to say, I won’t be watching Ms Crabbe’s foodie exploits. Waste of space.

  29. And as for the idea that Cheeseman is going to be tossed out of Labor’s most marginal seat and they’ll force Corrangamite to a by-election – plain ridiculous!

No doubt, they’ll move him away from the cameras in QT and he’ll be given no more Dorothy Dixers to ask Gillard or Swan and they’ll campaign dead in the seat in 2013.
The guy was being a good MP and listening to his constituents – a pity more marginal seat members, particularly that silly bimbo Deb O’Neill in Robertson, don’t do the same.

  42. Re Cheeseman in Corangamite
    ______________________
Cheesman won the seat in 2007 narrowly.. It hadn’t been won by Labor since 1929 when won by Col Crouch..once a Liberal -Deakonist member for Corio but beaten in 1910,when Corangamite was won by Jim Scullin later Labor PM 1929-31.

Sculin in a famous comment said then that Corangamite was the most”Squatter infested seat in Victoria “… lovely word “infested ”

Crouch who won Corangamite in 1929 was a “convert ” to Labor having been radicalised by the effects of WW! which he experienced at Gallipoli and elsewhere, and by a visit to Russia in the early years of the Revolution
He held it for one term ,and from then to Cheeseman’s victory in 2007 it was always a Lib seat
It’s been changing as Geelong’s suburbs spread inito the eastern end of the seat
In 2010 the Liberals chose a candidate who was the daughter of the former Lib member for the state seat in the Kennet days.,,and who loss gave Bracks a vital seat
There was much controversy in 2010 over some aspects of the Lib candidate private life which were aired in the campaign and Cheeseman held on…
There had been much disatification with him as local member and it was thought he would lose, but the swing TO Labor in Victoria in 2010 helped him hold on,and the liberal candidate’s personal problems helped him too

It is the most marginal of seats and the western end is a conservative area of small towns in the Western District..still”squatter infested ”
Coria next door has been held by Labor since a by-election win in the late 60ies,when Whitlam was on the rise

  43. Big difference between Keating circa 91 and Rudd now.
Keating was admired and respected by his colleagues many of whom voted with a heavy heart against him in the first leadership. They knew what he was doing but felt the timing wasn’t quite right.

Rudd has very few friends in caucus, once the sting goes out of his challenge they will move off him quicker than a scotsman off a hooker.

    loyalty at any price
    by cyenne on Feb.21, 2012

I’ve been asked many, many times about the difference between voluntary and mandatory pre-commitment for poker machines. Why is it that industry and state governments are so fixated on the idea of voluntary pre-commitment? The simple answer, to borrow a line from Clubs Australia’s recent campaign, is that it “won’t work” and “will hurt”. In other words, voluntary pre-commitment is backed by those with a vested financial interest because it will have no impact on their bottom line.

It really is that simple. The basic principle behind pre-commitment is that you pre-commit. You make a choice before you play. A pre-commitment system that allows poker machine players to change their minds, to “voluntarily” choose to ignore that commitment while playing, negates the entire concept.

    ...........

The absurdity of voluntary pre-commitment was highlighted in a recent Victorian Government discussion paper which contained, amongst other things, the prospect of using incentives like loyalty schemes to encourage poker machine players to use voluntary pre-commitment.

    worth a read
