Essential Research: 55-45 to Coalition

Despite having mostly come too early for the weekend’s excitement, the weekly Essential Research poll has moved away a point from the 54-46 stasis in which it had been locked since December 12, with the Coalition lead now at 55-45. Since Essential is a two-week rolling average, so that only half the poll was conducted over the previous week, this shift is more likely to be meaningful than it would from another pollster, although it’s probably still within the margin of error. Labor is down a point on the primary vote to 33 per cent with the Coalition up one to 48 per cent and the Greens up one to 11 per cent.

Despite the voting intention figures, a series of questions on substantive points of policy shows support for the government’s positions: 53 per cent support means testing the private health insurance rebate against 33 per cent opposed; 56 per cent support the National Broadband Network against 25 per cent opposed, respectively up two and down three since the question was last posed last April; and support for the mining tax is up four points since November to 55 per cent with opposition down five to 28 per cent.

  2. Ah, right.

Because a few of his colleagues have criticised him, it is apparently all Gillard’s fault because she has not publicly repudiated what they have said.

If R*dd told journos he’d had bacon and eggs for brekkie the headline would be: ‘R&dd devours muesli at brekkie!’

Then they’d spend weeks talking about whether it was full cream or skim milk and why this means the spill is on.

  29. Also note that Rudd’s resignation speech pushed what are likely his two main lines of attack.

1.) He was elected by ‘the people’, not the factions.
2.) He was knifed by ‘faceless men’.

  35. Get the feeling this was planned from the outset so his announcement was on the world stage?

Absolutely. Drag the press out of bed at 1.30am just to make sure everyone notices.

This move explains all the filthy looks in the pictures from Mexico, Rudd looked like he’d sat down on a large cactus most of the time. Heaven knows what damage he’s done to our international relationships with his bad temper and sulking and having his mind on plots and leadership challenges instead of whatever it was we sent him there to do.

The question now is will he challenge or is he going to do a Keating and just retire to the back benches. He may well find no-one misses him up in the front row with the class pets.

  38. "The truth is, I also feel very uncomfortable doing this from Washington, and not in Australia," he said.

"But I don't feel as if I have a choice, given the responsibilities I have here before me.

"Under no circumstances do I want Australia's international reputation brought into disrepute because of this ongoing saga."

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-02-22/kevin-rudd-makes-press-conference/3845758

Having read certain UK, French and US online newspapers over the past couple of weeks I haven’t seen any mention of the Gillard/Rudd stoush anywhere. How is it bringing Australia’s international reputation into disrepute? If there is any news about Australia, it concerns how well Australia is performing on the economic front.

“Can I just say, as I've said many times before, that we have a Prime Minister; I support the Prime Minister; and I intend to remain as Foreign Minister,” Mr Rudd said in response to questions about a leadership spill.

He doesn’t have the numbers. My guess is he won’t challenge and will watch and see what happens to the polls.

This is a very bad look for the Labor Party. He’s dumped it all on Gillard, Crean and the “faceless men”.
