Essential Research: 55-45 to Coalition
Despite having mostly come too early for the weekend’s excitement, the weekly Essential Research poll has moved away a point from the 54-46 stasis in which it had been locked since December 12, with the Coalition lead now at 55-45. Since Essential is a two-week rolling average, so that only half the poll was conducted over the previous week, this shift is more likely to be meaningful than it would from another pollster, although it’s probably still within the margin of error. Labor is down a point on the primary vote to 33 per cent with the Coalition up one to 48 per cent and the Greens up one to 11 per cent.
Despite the voting intention figures, a series of questions on substantive points of policy shows support for the government’s positions: 53 per cent support means testing the private health insurance rebate against 33 per cent opposed; 56 per cent support the National Broadband Network against 25 per cent opposed, respectively up two and down three since the question was last posed last April; and support for the mining tax is up four points since November to 55 per cent with opposition down five to 28 per cent.

Can you do the walk from Marina Bay around the Parkway (Rock something?) and back?
Or just have a strong drink in the shade (can’t do the drink bit myself these days and not to sure about the walk!).

Cuppa i agree, kezza recently lost her sister. She is searching for work
She is not in a privaleged position.
She has all kinds of stresses,

Well in ten years or less no newspapers could be a possibilty.——

Stanny (may I call you Stan),
Rather than presuming to lecture the good people here, it might be worth your time to work out how you’re going to apologise to your neighbours and loved ones if the Coalition (with your support) get in and inevitably cause their wages and conditions to be cut.

Interesting thing is Rudd doesn’t have to contest on monday.
He now has plenty of time, and knows quite well that the latest events will be deadly for Labor’s and Gillard’s poll. It will take a few weeks to come through maybe but this has just been a major poll set back for Labor.
He may challenge if he has enough numbers to seem reasonable, maybe 30 would be enough. He can then sit back and watch the effect of current events wash through.

TP -correction “Rudd was with 49% ……….not “is”.
I personally don’t “hate” Rudd any more than I hate Abbott. They are two men cut out of the same self-centred mould.
Your comment about Rudd leading Labor at the next election, is, currently, pitiful.
Miracles do happen, but if he should come back from here, regain the leadership and THEN win an election, I am out of the politics thing for good!
However, if he should stay, lose the leadership, go down with Labor (if it happens) and then comes back and rebuilds the party – after all he is young enough – he gets my vote.
Can’t see any of this happening though.

And the people will hate him if abbott where to be the product of his hate
For the party that gave him his chance in life.

Amazing, Pollbludgers now think Latham is a figure of authority and believability again.
Meanwhile, those on this site who said for the past week that Mr Rudd should resign now squeal like pigs because he did just that.
Gillard may well have the winning number in caucus, but she only has losing ones in the electorate. Bring on the election.
by Fargo61 on Feb 22, 2012 at 9:29 pm
Latham says of Gillard’s strategy that she will have 7 or 8 waiverers, and she’ll be on the phone to them now locking in their support. Not having a press conference, which is what the media want, but is irrelevent at this point.
Huge advantage to the PM.
by confessions on Feb 22, 2012 at 9:30 pm
Swannie’s words were good but they should have been kept for the Caucus on Monday not brought out tonight. It makes things worse. They should all just shut up or is that unwise when Rudd will probably be talking to the journos as soon as he gets back.
How about the cheek of Rudd saying he give a talk to the Nation or something similar. Isn’t he now just a humble backbencher?
Latham looks good in comparison.

by madcyril on Feb 22, 2012 at 9:37 pm
It is almost funny, in a way. Apparently its not enough for Gillard to have to work against the Coalition, big media and assorted vested interests, she has to work against the deposed king Kevin Rudd. Damn hard job. Given that this will all make winning the next election even harder, I hope her approach from here is just to try and get as much as she can before the election next year. Get more runs on the board even if she winds up only being a one-term PM.

by This little black duck on Feb 22, 2012 at 9:40 pm
So Rudd has been telling media editors that he would scrap the media enquiry! Latham isn’t scared to tell us what’s been happening. Chris Kenny looked a bit of a dill with that comment.

TP, no one else is saying that 30 will be enough. Looks like wishful thinking on your part. As for the polls, they’ll probably be bad initially, but if Rudd doesn’t challenge now and things settle down they’ll recover, but only if Rudd stops making mischief. Or do you want him to keep up the dummy spit from the back bench and keep doing damage until he gets his way?

Crean summed him up perfectly: prima donna.
