Morgan face-to-face: 52-48 to Coalition

Last weekend’s Morgan face-to-face survey echoed other polls conducted at the time in showing little change on earlier polling despite Labor’s leadership turmoil, though as always it failed to echo other polls in having Labor’s primary vote several points higher. In this case Labor’s primary vote was up half a point on the previous week to 37.5 per cent, with the Coalition also up a point to 42.5 per cent and the Greens down 3.5 per cent from an anomalous 14.5 per cent last time. As usual with Morgan (though not Nielsen), there was a substantial difference between the two-party preferred results as derived by respondent allocation (52-48 to the Coalition) and using preference flows from the previous election (50-50).

NOTE: Due to server upgrades which will hopefully put an end to Crikey’s notorious technical gremlins, comments will be closed through the entirety of Sunday morning (i.e. about midnight to about noon).

A pity we can’t see the stunned visages of the media hacks in the press conference – I’d like to see Shanahan, Coorey, et al wiping the egg from their faces!

To paraphrase DS Chisholm from Minder, the only thing I believe in the newspaper is the date.

Oh please. You insisted only yesterday Smith and/or Crean would be appointed to FM because the PM had no authority over the factions.

  13. The government is no longer trying to get its message out through the MSM. Instead they’ve decided to smash them to bits first and then calmly walk through the rubble and let the bare facts speak to the public.

Nice image. Given how load the noise has got and how little the electorate is noticing, they may get away with it.

News limited trashed in Great Britain, ignored in Australia. Oh how the mighty fall.

  28. Bob Carr is an enviable and highly credentialled choice for Foreign Minister, and it is doubly a triumph for the PM as the media hacks have spent the last 3 days rubbishing her because they said that she couldn’t get this eminently qualified candidate to the starting gate because of the ‘faceless men.’

Now she vaults over their heads with Carr on her back, does a full gainer with a half twist and lands with her two feet on Dennis Shanahan’s head!

The likes of Greg Sheridan and other News Ltd hacks who talked Carr up because they thought he was scratched can’t now do anything but call this what is is – an unambiguously good appointment.

  41. Labor now has a Carr Carr. Must be a song in that somewhere.

by This little black duck on Mar 2, 2012 at 12:46 pm

  42. Gillard has made much of the fact that she, as leader, chooses her ministers. This was a power seized by Rudd (last week he said he had been wrong and would, if he won the ballot, restore to caucus the right to choose the frontbench). This week has shown the practical limits to Gillard exercising that power. She has talked tough but been exposed as weak.

Would Carr have been a plus to the Gillard government if the plan had come off? There are arguments on both sides. His arrival would have caused tension and made it look as if the federal party had to desperately import someone for the job. But Carr has a good name; he would have added some lustre to the federal party. He knows about foreign affairs and could have cut a figure on the international stage.

  46. Another aspect of Bob Carr becoming FA Minister, being a Senator, is when there is a crucial vote in the HoR he won’t have to be called home during overseas meetings.

by MsAdventure on Mar 2, 2012 at 12:50 pm

  47. The collective MSM dunderheads have been forced to eat a large slab of humble pie – how many will swallow it meekly, and how many will spit it out and try to spin this Carr appointment coup as somehow still a ‘failure’ by PM Gillard?

The ability of the likes of Shanahan to polish a turd knows no bounds, so expect Dennis to have the king size can of Mr Sheen on his desk as he cleans off the shit that he dropped there himself over the last 3 days and gets the elbow grease to work.
