Essential Research: 56-44 to Coalition

The latest weekly Essential Research survey shows no change on last week, bar a one point drop in the Greens vote to 10 per cent: the Coalition is on 49 per cent of the primary vote and Labor on 32 per cent, with the Coalition’s two-party lead at 56-44. Essential also found plenty of interesting questions to ask about the Labor leadership. Respondents were asked to evaluate the performance of various actors during the challenge, with Kevin Rudd coming out least badly (33 per cent good, 35 per cent poor), “Labor Party ministers” the worst (10 per cent and 52 per cent), the media also very poorly (14 per cent and 43 per cent), Julia Gillard not well at all (23 per cent and 49 per cent) and Tony Abbott hardly better even if it might be hard to recall what he did exactly (25 per cent and 40 per cent).

Sixty-two per cent of respondents said the leadership challenge was bad for the government and 47 per cent that it has made them less likely to vote Labor (64 per cent among Coalition supporters, obviously including many who wouldn’t vote Labor in a pink fit), against 13 per cent who said it was a good thing and another 13 per cent (or perhaps the same 13 per cent) who they were more likely to vote Labor. A question on Kevin Rudd’s future produces a miraculously even three-way split with 29 per cent saying he should stay in parliament and again challenge for the leadership, 28 per cent saying he should stay in parliament and not challenge for the leadership and 30 per cent saying he should resign from parliament.

Respondents were asked to indicate whether they supported the Australian system of leaders being elected by MPs (36 per cent), American-style presidential primaries (31 per cent) and British-style election by both MPs and party members (11 per cent). Fifty-six per cent believed MPs should be guided by public opinion in leadership contests against 30 per cent by who they believed was the best person. The poll also points to a slight increase in support for an early election since the end of January, up three to 44 per cent with support for a completed term down two to 46 per cent.

We have also had Newspoll publish results from last week’s polling on the most important political issues and the best party to handle them. Such figures are invariably very closely associated with voting intention, and since this was a 53-47 poll result, it finds Labor improving considerably since the question was last asked as part of the poll of October 7-9, which was a 57-43 result. Labor has recovered big leads on its traditional strong suits of health, education, industrial relations and climate change, and closed the gap on the economy, interest rates and national security. 2. gusface #1634, the Aust. Rail Track Corporation does have a long term strategy for double track Sydney-Melbourne, the standardisation of Victoria’s broad gauge track Seymor-Wodonga has just delivered a large slice of that, they have also installed more and longer passing loops in some single track areas between Albury and Junee and also on the NSW north coast line. Focussed very much on freight capacity and transit times.

Agree with you about the maybe on Newcastle and Wollongong, but even there I think its “faster” not “very fast” that makes sense.

  11. What’s this? I thought we had a pretty neat parental leave scheme, now.

Well, Eleanor there was been some level of disquiet for some time that while Mr Lawrence is known to be an excellent union leader and a successful negotiator, he hasn't been a stronger advocate on the public stages those in the union movement would like and for example there has been some disappointment within the movement that the ACTU didn't put more pressure on the Government for a more comprehensive paid parental leave scheme

  28. BW @1640:

I had that Coalition policy roll-call sorted out at one stage:

    1. Do nothing – including all roll-backs of ALP policy
    2. Do what Howard did
    3. We’ll have it ready for the next election (the “election now!” paradox)

I have to add a fourth now that Abbott has had a few brain-farts:

    4. Wish-list – populist-sounding things that’ll definitely happen when debt is paid off (ie. when hell freezes over)

That last one is, I assume, the result of intensive Liberal efforts to put a positive spin on their message for 2012. They want us to believe that aspirational policies are just the same as real policies.

The Greens are supporters of freight rail where appropriate and have pushed this for a long time.

You only have to read the Greens numerous media releases to know that this is the case:

  41. New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell is continuing to stand by his Gaming Minister, despite mounting pressure to sack him over his dealings with Sydney's Star casino.

The controversy centres on allegations of sexual harassment at the casino, and the sacking of a female employee who complained.

A series of leaked emails and text messages are continuing to cause problems for the Premier.

One text message from Gaming Minister George Souris shows he agreed to keep details of the harassment claim at the casino from the Premier.

Who is leaking stuff about O’Farrell and why? It makes little sense to me unless someone is trying to shaft him.

That’s exactly the reaction I had to confessions comment last night.

I thought Brown was a bit arrogant tonight. He’s a leader of a minor party with 10% of the vote. Attacking mainstream journos for being in the Lib camp (however true) reminds me of Pauline Hanson and the attacks her party made on msm.

Projection much  Everyone here can rail against the msm 24/7 here but BB is arrogant if he does  Then she slurs him by association.

Mr Andrews' spokesman said the opposition will be waiting to see whether the trial gets up.

It's believed the coalition most likely won't be supporting the government's proposed ACT trial when it comes to a vote in parliament.

Mr Andrews later said in a statement he was not convinced the trial would go ahead because gaming manufacturers had told him the timeframe for the trial was unrealistic and they couldn't produce new machines in time.
