Morgan face-to-face: 52-48 to Coalition

Morgan’s latest face-to-face poll, conducted last weekend from a sample of 878, shows no change in the two-party support from poll conducted a week earlier in the two days before the Labor leadership spill: the Coalition leads 52-48 on respondent-allocated preferences and 50-50 with preferences distributed as per the result of the 2010 election. However, both major parties are up on the primary vote, Labor by 1.5 per cent to 39 per cent and the Coalition by 1 per cent to 43.5 per cent. The Greens are down one point to 10 per cent with “others” down 1.5 per cent to 7.5 per cent. One hesitates to read too much into Morgan face-to-face polls, but I’m tempted to read this as more evidence of opinion polling’s remarkable imperviousness to recent political turmoil (though judgement should be reserved until more post-spill polling evidence becomes available). Morgan also treats us to state-level breakdowns derived from the last month of regular weekend polling, thereby producing useable samples for the states individually. This convincingly shows Labor struggling in NSW and performing best in South Australia, but eyebrows may be raised at the result from Queensland: Labor trails only 51-49, quite a lot better for them than the 54.5-45.5 New South Wales result, and has a higher primary vote than in Victoria (39.5 per cent compared with 38 per cent).

  1. Would the costs incurred on miners for these dams be tax deductable?

It would make the miners uncompetitive!

  2. Would the costs incurred on miners for these dams be tax deductable?

Only if those expenses improved their income. At best, they might get a percentage because Teh Dams would not be entirely for their own good.

Good luck to them to try to get a deduction for charity!

  3. Judith Sloane on talking about matters economic. Ms. Sloane was supercilious, condescending – saying at one point, that if Mr. Koukoulas went to a superior university, he wouldn’t be supporting the gov’t's actions during the GFC or wtte – and using the usual tactic of interrupting and talking over Mr. Koukoulas. Mr. Koukoulas was not having this latter tactic and put her firmly but politely in her box. He also made a number of very telling points about the gov’t's economic management. She was largely unable to respond with anything other than talking up labour “flexibility” as code for lesser wages as the answer to any further GFC type scenario. Mr. Koukoulas nailed her on this most effectively.

missed it but not unexpected from Sloane. To quote someones university as being relevant shows that she has clearly lost the debate. her only argument is essentially work choices in every matter. ofcourse the OO lap up her diatribe on a regular basis because they just love her propaganda.

Does she have a decent record of predictions? Has she produced decently vetted papers?

  8. Disturbing politics in France, quite unbelievable from a socialist President to emit a dog whistle based on halal meat.

“France has failed to learn the lesson of its history, says Abdenebi: “In 1939 when there was an economic crisis, the enemy was the Jews. Today there is a crisis and it is the Muslims. It’s the same discrimination, just a different community.”

Kamel Saidi, 34, the softly spoken owner of Les Enfants Terribles, says he finds the political atmosphere “revolting and tiring”. And he cannot see the situation improving. “People feel afraid because today the party of the right is adopting the ideas of the extreme right. What’s even more worrying is that this attitude is not going to change, certainly not in the near future.”

  17. How could I forget.

In a speech to Parliament yesterday, backbencher Luke Simpkins said most Australians did not know that most of the meat they ate came from animals killed in accordance with Muslim law.

“By having Australians unwittingly eating Halal food we are all one step down the path towards the conversion, and that is a step we should only make with full knowledge and one that should not be imposed upon us without us knowing,” Mr Simpkins told Parliament.

“What is happening is wrong. Too often the minorities in this country are looked after without regard to the majority.”

Mr Simpkins said he had carried out an unofficial survey in his northern-suburbs electorate of Cowan and had discovered that most meat at major chains such as Coles or Woolworths had been killed under Halal conditions, but had not been labelled as such.

The literature says it is 100 minutes. it is actually 200 minutes. WIN added 60 minutes more for adds.

  23. It’s looking more and more likely that the next President of France will be the Socialist nominee François Hollande, who has been leading against the centre-right UMP incumbent Nicholas Sarkozy in opinion polls in double digits for the past year.

The election will take place next month, but it’s looking likely that there will need to be a run-off election in May, since neither candidate appears to be able to secure more than 50% of the vote.

  24. for those who may have missed the outrageous Cameron Stewart OO article on the media enquiry, it has (with good cause) wound up the media academics who have been roundly defamed by Murdoch’s hatchet man (Stewart’s other notches are Simon Overland, Haneef and Climate change denial ramping).

what is truly amazing, is that Murdoch’s minions have so much hubris, that they don’t realise they are slowly digging their own graves. They are simply demonstrating the “don’t fuck with us” mentality which permeates the Murdoch empire globally- from FoxNews to the London tabloids to the regime change antics of the OO and Daily Telecrap. Well the day of reckoning is approaching very very quickly, and they seemingly are blind to it.

this is an interesting take on the OO’s tactics

That is wrong. It should be “The Australian supports case against ‘enforced self-regulation’ #Finkelstein”

  32. Judith Sloan was recently on Club Troppo sneering of Matt Cowgill (whose qualifications include MSc Finance (Economic Policy) at the University of London) that “arithmetic may not be his strong suit”, although she wasn’t able to explain why. Shortly afterward she ran away from the site crying on account of its “absence of civil discourse and courtesy”. One week later, she got 100 confused with 100,000.

The thrust of the article linked is that journalist academics may be unenthusiastic towards the model regulator suggested by Finklestein QC, one concern being is that it may be used by powerful institutions to complain about individuals and smaller players.
