Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

  13. And I also have lots of friends and family who think Julia is doing a great job. It doesn’t tally with the polls and that may just be a reflection of my ability to choose the company I keep wisely but I also think that the notion that she is hated by all is a furphy that is being deliberately cultivated. We will see. Much water to pass under the bridge yet as much as we are all it is all over bar the shouting and that we should give up now. Lucky for the spartans some of this lot weren’t at Thermopylae.

  20. In a fit of senile confusion, Ms Grattan announces that Ms Grattan should resign.

According to Ms Grattan, she has lost balance. She has developed a vicious streak when it comes to writing about Ms Gillard. This streak is entirely absent when Ms Grattan is writing about Mr Abbott. Ms Grattan is fixated on the personal rather than the policy when writing about Ms Gillard. OTOH, when writing about Mr Abbott, Ms Grattan writes about the policy rather than the personal. Ms Grattan noted that this sort of behaviour is inexcusable for a veteran journalist with my sort of record.

Ms Grattan announced that she is a once-excellent journalist and that her equine equivalent, the sway-backed old grey mare, would have been unsaddled and sent up to the back paddock for a well-earned retirement long ago.

In conclusion, Ms Grattan mused that it was ‘…time for some grass.’

In response to this announcement, a tribute has flooded in from Ms Grattan.

  30. They have in common one thing: they are feather dusters who once were roosters. They seem unable to cotton onto the idea of helping the current head hen in the pecking order. Instead they nurse their relevance deprivation disorders by feeding the insatiable maw of the MSM and by aiding and abetting Mr Abbott.

Boerwar – agreed but all of them now report for duty to Murdochia in its various forms.

Just watched Clive Palmer and it seems he wants his family to take over the political scene with both of them standing for the LNP. How lucky Barnaby will be to have them join him in buffoonery.

  40. I have since calmed down. I am weak……..

Don’t let it get you down.

From now till July 1st will be the worst period for spin and slander i think. Its the last chance for the Fibs to even try to head off any of the REAL delivery on the major ALP initiatives of this term.

I’d say that the ALP HoR members know that they made their choice in Feb to stick with the Gillard agenda / plan, and have more to lose by repudiating that, than by sticking it out.

Forget the MSM gasping for a leadership spill. They have missed most of the significant events of this term and keep going back to this since they figure they have to be right sometime.

The polls are crap, but that can and i think will change. Its mid term fer chrisake!

Hang in. Just think how good it will feel to visit Bolt, Akerman, or the Nuttertruckers blog after the ALP wins in 2013?? :)

  44. Deb #1009, sincerely not attacking you here, it says everything about our media that a politically interested person would not know what the NDIS is.

It has been one of the major lines from the Government in parliament for months (PM, Swan, Macklin, Albo and more) and lots of backbenchers on both sides; Abbott has talked about it (albeit in slippery terms) and yet its almost nowhere in most media commentary. A few honourable exceptions there .

This is a government doing huge things but you’d be forgiven for not knowing.

    Clive Palmer for Canberra?

The announcement this morning that businessman Clive Palmer wants to nominate for LNP endorsement in Lilley against Treasurer Wayne Swan is a distraction the Labor Party would welcome today, and welcome even more in the next Federal election campaign.
