Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition
Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.
UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

Anyone who believes Palmer will apply for preselection, let alone get selected, probably also believe Julia Gillard will win the next election.

PM presser on ABC 24 re NDIS. Launch sites will begin July 2013 – Abbott has declared it is an election gimmick but PM hit back that the Disabled have waited long enough and Abbott’s “bi-partisan” approach is wrapped up in aspirations for them into the far distant future.
by janice2 on Apr 30, 2012 at 2:51 pm
You miss the obvious. This is how it works:
1 Palmer makes announcement
2 Palmer withdraws his interest
3 Abbott becomes PM
4 Palmer forces by-election in a very safe QLD seat
5 Palmer wins and becomes PM by flushing Abbott around the S bend
That’s what needs to be conveyed by Labor. Palmer is becoming a very useful Labor weapon.

TH: Indeed, one must also ask why someone who already pretty much *owns* a state and is a millionaire in his own right (despite his taxpaying status) would want to take such a HUGE step down, financially, to take a seat in parliament where – certainly under a non-LNP Government, his vote would be worth exactly the same as everyone else’s.
It’s pretty obvious he has no intention of being an ordinary backbencher. He wants to wield power BIG TIME.

So Clive Palmer is building Titanic 2. That’s where he will take Australia if he ever becomes PM – to the bottom via the iceberg

There are all those things like pesky environmental rules slowing down the pillaging. Even as a mere back bench he would get the inside hot goss’ and who was actually saying what. From there the rest is easy.

If this isn’t a Clive Palmer stunt, I wonder what Abbott and his mob will do about it. I couldn’t help but notice that when asked about it after his Perth presser, Abbott was gobsmacked (he did say ‘surprised’ though) and gave that sick sniggering laugh and said “Clive is a real character”. Does not Abbott realise that after buying the LNP and Q’ld, he’s not about to keep his paws out of the pie?

Imacca – the Fib spin does seem to be getting more desperate to head off the things they know they will have a hard job demolishing if they win in 2013 (CT, MRRT, PPpackaging, NBN, etc). Today Abbott has amazed even me. He ‘would never do deals’, he has ‘integrity’, Labor is responsible for suggesting that Ashby is being paid for telling tales, for starters. He took a couple of questions on Palmer and then said he’d answered enough so onto other things. Surprisingly, a couple of journos asked more questions about Palmer. They may have had enough of him fobbing them off. Let’s hope that more take the same attitude.

Bludgers. I have a question concerning induction into the ALP that I am hoping some here can shed some light on.
As I have stated before I recently joined the party. I sent off my form not long after the Qld Election. A couple of weeks went past with no communication at all. No email – no acknowledgement of my application at all.
Feeling a little despondent about the wait I sent off an email to head-office in Qld asking what the hold up was (and pointing out that attracting new members might be easier if the process was better). After a week I got a response saying my membership had been approved at the admin c’tee on 16 April. Wicked.
The email also included contacts for branch secretaries here in Griffith. So I instantly shot off an email to the nearest branch requesting information about when the next meeting was and expressing my excitement at getting involved.
I haven’t heard a peep from anyone since. Not from the branch. Not in the mail. No membership card. Nothing. Still don’t know when the next meeting is.
I imagine that many in the local area will have been very busy lately with the local govt and South Bris. by-election and that may have caused some delay. But I just wanted to know what the usual thing is – like how long do I wait before I start making phone calls?

Give the branch sec a call. They’re all volunteers, and they’ll have been busy organising booths etc – after an election you tend to get all politicked out.
Also, after elections, it’s quite common for branches not to meet for a while.

reason why they are fast tracking and hardening their attack for an election
