Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition
Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.
UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

boinzo – whack off an email to head office telling them which branch you have chosen. They send the info off to that Branch which will usually hold a monthly meeting. That meeting accepts your membership then contacts you. Otherwise you membership sits at the Central Office as part of the general membership of the ALP.
The membership ticket usually takes a little while to come through. Just try to find the name of Secretary of the branch you’ve chosen and ring if you can. I would imagine they’ve been very busy with Council and SB elections and will now be getting back to normal activities.

Apparently Titanic 2 will be a virtual replica of Titanic 1. Thus it will be coal fired (using Mr Palmer’s Queensland coal) and the boilers will be hand fired by navvies who fall out of favour with the boss.
To maintain authenticity, there will be insufficient lifeboats.
Meanwhile, it is proposed to steer it deliberately into an iceberg to demonstrate its “unsinkable” qualities.
Finally, a contract will be signed with Mr Murdoch’s Fox Studios to make a dramatic motion picture in the event that the “unsinkable” vessel actually does sink.
Postscript: Mr Palmer himself will not be on board the maiden voyage as he will be busy as Australian Prime Minister selling ice to Eskimos, due to the fact that global warming will have caused all ice in their homeland to disappear.

I love it when Joe appeals to our better natures. Hopefully he can dig up some figures from Somalia or Upper Volta to show us what we have to compete with.
Maybe somebody can point out to him that he can get his calculator to spell’ boobies’. That’ll keep him occupied for a while.

Sorry, had lunch etc.
I don’t recall being sent any results. The ballot papers are counted by the AEC I think, so the results must be available somewhere.
There isn’t a plethora of candidates in the Greens so anyone who volunteers to be a candidate gets to be on the ballot is my understanding.
Not aware of any factions in the Greens.

lizzie #1077, yes this is what the loto means by “bipartisan support”.
Just like on aged care reform, one line to claim policy respectability, another line of GREAT BIG NEW TAX alarmism. In this case he gets to be the respectable one and Hockey does the dirty stuff; on aged care the roles were reversed with Robb taking the respectable role and the loto going the rats. But then who is asking them for consistency?
Some comments around the aged stuff thought it was just that they hadnt sorted their lines out. I’m convinced that in fact they have, for maximum deceptive effect.

Good heavens! what is this country coming to? Clive Palmer as an MP or PM? I can’t believe Tony Abbott would allow Clive to be preselected, Tony knows that Clive would want to be PM.
I’m surprised that Mr Palmer knows what pre selection is. In fact I’d be surprised if he can read or has any idea what democracy means..
I think it’s time the ALP started asking Mr Palmer about tax. or perhaps he doesn’t know what that is either…
Clive Palmer in parliament..what a totally depressing thought..
by liyana on Apr 30, 2012 at 3:29 pm
Latika Bourkle from the ABC is currently quoting Tony Abbott as saying the NDIS will happen, which flies straight in the face of what Hockley just said.
However, I am not sure if Latika is quoting fresh comments from Abbott or juxtaposing what he said a week or so ago against Hockey’s contradictory statements.

You need to find someone who knows about the branches in your area, and the state rules. In WA there are branches ‘of and for’ certain people. So if you stumble on a miso’s branch they may well not want you there at all. There are also what I’d loosely call ‘members’ branches where the member holds them together, in Qld if you have those kind of branches then well the sound you hear is them collapsing into a vacuum.
Adam was previously the resident expert of ALP branches and why the ALP didn’t really want real members in branches, it was all very depressing stuff, but on Adam’s view boiled down to it all being our fault and the central organization was certainly not going to do anything about something that was essentially our fault.
Consequently I’m currently a member of the central branch which I presume isn’t a real branch at all, it certainly doesn’t meet, or if it does meet doesn’t invite its members to meetings.
If you enjoy swimming upstream stick with your local branch (I personally think the ALP needs to do a lot more ‘in communities’ not just ‘for communities’ and that currently we give the local libs & the shadow libs (local chambers of commerce) a massive free kick with our lack of local presence when we don’t hold a seat).
In my seat there has been a boundary change and the poor local member from next door has to cross the border and meet her new suburb. Terribly important that they find out where we are and let us have the honor of meeting them. Meanwhile the libs have three real locals, two of whom I actually rate as decent people up for preselection. The libs are pretty stupid and will probably select the one I know is an idiot, but if they are smart enough to pick one of the others then my ‘new’ local member pretty much deserves to win.
The branch here pretty much is non-existent.

The PM was good today. She will leave them all for dead.
She has taken ownership of the NDIS today.
Abbott was in WA. He was supposed to go to the NDIS rally there but decided playing politics was better and went on location for more ranting.
He had a chance to day to grab some of the limelight with NDIS but could not let the politics go.
I am full of confidence for the next 18 months and full of confidence for the PM.
Bad days are there to make the good times even better.

No it doesn’t – PM has announced NDIS will happen but has not said how much will be spent and where the money is coming from. The Coalition has said they will support the NDIS BUT need to know how it will be funded and to what level. That is not contradictory – it is being financially repsonsible.
by Compact Crank on Apr 30, 2012 at 3:36 pm
responsible means one they wont undo at the next election which means Tony’s NDIS, not a bipartisan one at all, certainly not one the Govt can expect any credit for.
The media should lay off the stupid pills for a couple of hours and they could rip him to shreds, he is a paper man with pre-perferated lines to rip, and almost every day he goes over them with a black marker pen so we can see them.

Oh they do, – just not the way the ALP are proposing. If it’s too generous it’ll only encourage more people to become disabled.
If I heard Hockey right the other week, they’ll be funding it by abolishing welfare for the diasbled. He doesn’t like their culture of entitlement – we’ll never be able to compete with North Korea that way.
by Aguirre on Apr 30, 2012 at 3:41 pm

Correct. Central branch is sort of a limbo ish place for members who don’t belong to a branch.
In fairness, it’s often quite deliberate – people who want to support the ALP but don’t want to be ‘outted’. (I regularly contact CB members on my list, and that’s often the reaction. They’re often even a bit peeved I have their details).
What has made membership difficult is the push to stamp out branch stacking, which has lead to some fairly arcane processes. If you join the ‘wrong’ branch – one which has a dodgy reputation, even if you’re totally unaware of that – it can takes years for your membership to be processed.
(These rules were brought in, ironically, by the very people who rabbit on about the need for the party to be more open and inclusive….)
And, of course, branches themselves are – like all community groups – very different in the way they approach new members. Some embrace them, others are cliquey and exclusive.
The best way to join is to go to a branch meeting/s first and then apply for membership through the branch you want to join.

I think you will find that the ALP in Griffith has been tied up with the election and may not have met.
You can do the following
1. Wander into KRudd’s electorate office. They will (I assume) have details of every branch in Griffith (WWP no we do not have Miscos Branches)
2. Ask William to ask Feeney on here for his email. He is in Griffith so he would be able to find you an appropriate branch.
3. Ring the ALP office and ask for a meeting date.
