Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

Might be that way in Melbourne but in Qld there is still a welcoming Branch structure – small and in dire need of new people but still existing.

Seriously if you REALLY want to join a branch (which I strongly advise) ring up Rudd’s electoral office. Does not matter if you are for or against him – he will have (or his staff will) a complete list of every branch. MPs are expected to attend meetings occasionally of each branch so the office will have meeting dates and times.

  8. DTT. Good plan. I actually think it is Jackie’s branch I am trying to join (but haven’t heard back from). I definitely acknowledge South Brisbane members have had much greater priorities than my new membership of late! I was just wondering what the normal timeframe was so I could set the clock running now the elections here are done and then follow up as needed.

It is a bit weird that it is so hard to find out what the procedure actually is. People tend to join when they are pumped up and passionate and motivated. The process seems to wait for all that energy to dissipate before allowing entry to the party. Just feels counter-intuitive to me.

  12. I was talking to a very in the know person who says that the labor government is working very hard and successfully at embedding reform to Abbott proof it especially with things like the NDIS. They were grudging but with new respect for Gillard as a political operator. They admitted that they had misread her long term vision. Interesting.

  13. some interesting stats etc on one of distinctive features of Australia – its housing market:

According to the ATO, there were 1,751,679 property investors declared to the ATO in 2009-10 - representing one in seven taxpayers - an increase of 59,235 from the 2008-09 financial year.

Total losses on investment properties were $4.810 billion in 2009-10, or $2746 per property investor, down from $6.528 billion ($3857 per investor) in 2008-09.

Of the 1,751,679 property investors recorded by the ATO in 2009-10, 63% or 1,110,922 were "negatively geared", meaning that holding costs (eg, interest payments, maintenance, and other costs) outweighed income from rents.

Of these negatively geared investors, nearly three-quarters earned less than $80,000 in 2009-10, and the average loss was $9132 per negatively geared investor, or $176 per week...

YES YES YES. First time I rang we were quite young newly married and newly mortgaged upto the maximum and I was concerned I couldn’t afford it. Probably in reality there was a 20$ membership rate) or lower I should have been told about, but I got a long lecture about compulsory levies they might raise at any time. Was many years later I joined my local branch at the invitation of my local member.

My local member in now a liberal, they haven’t extended the same invitation.

  30. Australia’s move to a clean energy future has taken centre stage at an international forum in Rome this week. The Major Economies Forum (MEF) on Energy and Climate Change, held in the Italian capital, has heard discussions about Australia’s plans for a clean energy economy.

During the forum, the Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Mark Dreyfus, highlighted Australia’s carefully planned transition to a low pollution, cleaner energy economy through the carbon price and Clean Energy Future package.

“The Australian Government is making good progress in its discussions with the EU on the development of international carbon markets and the possibility of linking the EU Emissions Trading System and Australia’s Carbon Pricing Mechanism,” Mr Dreyfus said.

He said Australia had “much to learn” from the EU’s experiences, considering its emissions trading scheme has been in action since 2005 and now covers 27 countries plus three non-EU members.

A report to the MEF by the International Energy Agency warns that delaying action on climate change will come at great expense to the global economy – every dollar not spent now will cost $4.30 in another 10 years. The MEF will help shape the agenda for international climate change negotiations as we head toward a legally binding agreement in 2015.

I suggest you rock up to some the meetings that are being held in the next week or so. You might find you click with them better. I know that right now they would all welcome a new face. The meetings are usually short and you can get an idea as the which branch you like – ideally there will be a few people of your own age etc. Helps a lot if there is a ready made group you can fall in with.

So we’ve got a clear head on everything, the numbers are only an issue if there’s a by election or if any of the independents currently supporting the ALP change their mind … In other words, nothing’s really changed
