Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

  8. NewsLtd groupies. Feast on this poll conducted “exclusivley” for the NewsLtd mastheads. And in a show of support for these sensible “voters”, NewsLtd has instructed NewsPoll to restrict further polling to those who have participated in this one.

sprocket_ News Ltd editors certainly jump when the boss tells them too. Murdoch tweeted on Saturday that we need an election and quick as a flash, the lackeys come to heel. Yet, he believes he doesn’t have the power to influence voters – pigs.. flying!

What has that got to do with his responsibilities as a Senator for South Australia?

The Australian Government runs Australia’s Foreign Policy, not individual Senators.

  16. bemused

It would be as part of a Senatorial Committee that helps out foreign affairs with election monitoring. So no need to get on a high horse. Many Senators spend several terms without contributing much so it is good to see a Senator willing to do so. His constituents seem real happy with his work too.

Nick Xenophon has been reporting directly from Malaysia – good on him for it.

    Here is Bob Carr’s approach:

Senator Carr said the Government is monitoring developments.

"I've asked the Australian mission to report on the situation - we're concerned about reports of violence, but I've got to acknowledge this is an issue for the government of Malaysia," he said.

"Australia, in every situation around the world, supports the principle of free and fair elections. But this is a matter for Malaysia".

  29. Federal independent MP Andrew Wilkie says he would not support a no-confidence motion in the Gillard government over its handling of the Craig Thomson and Peter Slipper affairs.

Mr Wilkie says Prime Minister Julia Gillard has made the right call on both members, although she should have suspended Mr Thomson earlier.

"The prime minister has the numbers currently and she should be allowed to get on and run the country," Mr Wilkie said on Monday after attending a Hobart rally for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

"If the opposition think there's a question of the parliament's confidence in the prime minister or the government they should bring on a no-confidence motion and stop talking about it.

  38. Looks like Gillard has helped a few of the Indies get off the hook for allowing their mouths to run off in ways they probably regret.

If the PM had held the line, the Indies would have had to put up or shut up regarding the confidence motion. I doubt they really wanted to make a decision that was tantamount to a no confidence motion in the Government because quite a few would not have been returning were an election called.

As always, Gillard has optimised her and the Government’s position in the Parliament at the coming session without getting Slipper or Thomson offside, saved the Indies from embarrassing themselves and left the MSM and Oppos shaking their fists in frustrated fury. All in all another demonstration of the PM’s powerful negotiating skills.

If anyone with seriously bad intentions wished to penetrate the ALP they would have no problem.

This so called ‘security’ is just a manifestation of paranoia or part of a struggle over pre-selections in a particular area.

The best way to deal with security would be to have people join a local branch where they might be known to existing members.

They know the exact time milking was due. A.M. or P.M being just 10 minutes late meant being greeted by the herd crowded around the gate flicking their tails impatiently :)
Out of milking season however it was a different story. They were quite content to just laze about all day in the paddock chewing their cud.
