Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

@1063 – Tom – there is more chance of Julia Gillard leading the ALP to another election victory than the fiction you are writing ever happening.

Nice try sunshine but you can hear the beat of Palmer’s drum just as cleary as the rest of us. He will destroy Abbott or anything else in his way.

Abbott wants an election but will not move a confidence motion, he wants the Indies to do it for him. Maybe he is worried he will freeze and just nod at the Speaker with everyone wondering if a petit mal is occurring.

  13. The Media going crazy over some trivial issues. Why? could not be that the government is thinking of finally regulating them.

The issues are so trivial and the media wants an election and a change of government.

It is simply a joke. The only change that should happen should be in September or October Julia should resign or be replaced with Rudd. She has simply been incompetent from day one.

The same as our media and the big Billlions who throw around their money like confetti on projects which mean nothing to real people, build the Titanic two is this guy for real?

  16. MM @ 1096 – thanks for the link. Astonishing, isn’t it that some people aren’t just bursting with pride at having such an obviously warm hearted, attractive, stylish, and charismatic national leader? That she is strong, resilient, savvy and sensible is pretty obvious too.

One could understand it if perhaps half our media or even a bit more, were critical of her and her polices. But no, almost the entire news commentariat is hostile and bent on bringing her and her government down. Not only that but they keep talking about the hatred for her out in voter land. Hatred? I don’t know many people who actively hate anyone, much less a public figure whom they’ve never met personally, at a time when most of us are employed and living in a country acknowledged as among the world’s most prosperous and secure, because of her government’s sound policies.

So why the hatred? Oh yes, it’s because she’s a liar and there is a stench of slime and scandal about her and her government. Who says so? Well Tony Abbott does every day and in every way that he possibly can and his message is aired and repeated continuously on every news outlet possible. What was the lie? What are the scandals? If real, how do they affect the well being of the citizens of this country?

In all seriousness – I understand there is some requirement for scrutiny – but the existing process of joining the ALP is just silly for an organisation that publicly claims to want new members.

    What period was it for?

by victoria on Apr 30, 2012 at 5:29 pm

  39. Abbott was just managing to carry off the “tainted man” theme today, sucking up the oxygen all over the MSM, until Clive blundered in with another “look at me” presser. Tony’s wingman Hockey tried to distract the MSM back to the crisis-du-jour by calling his own presser and dropping a little hint that things are not going too well between Gillard and Swan. (What? Wonder who told him that?)

All day, the MSM commentariat had been braying in perfect harmony that Gillard is finished (again). News Ltd and Fairfax had even organised opinion polls showing an amazing 99% of australians want a fresh election, now. Rupert would be pleased.

And then Clive waddled into the limelight. Poor Tony. The best he could say, as he has said many times before, is “Look, Clive is a character, hah hah”. It will be Clive Palmer wall-to-wall on the news tonight, and he hasn’t even been preselected yet. Switching off until Media Watch.

If there was no credit card policy in Williamson’s time, it could be inferred there was none beforehand

by shellbell on Apr 30, 2012 at 5:33 pm

  48. BK – no mention of Temby so it’s no wonder that Speers didn’t say anything except that the report had been received. It must have hurt like heck to read it – there go the evening’s headlines and beat ups.

by BH on Apr 30, 2012 at 5:33 pm

  49. The main “problems” for the union in the Temby Interim Report are either dated after Thomson left the Union or indicated that there were insufficient procedures around use of credit cards.

In other words, Thommo is exonerated by this report.

Now, there is still the FWA report, but I suspect it will say the same as this.

The problem was insufficient controls and rules over the use of credit cards. That people took advantage of that situation isn’t actually the issue; there was, legally, no wrongdoing.

I see a swimming pool coming up in Mr Thomson’s near future …
